  1. A few months ago I shared a guide on how to make a website in (about) five minutes with as little code as possible.

And if that's still too much code, here's a follow up with almost none.

    Hope you'll enjoy!

  6. Well, it's official, I have torn down my site from surge.sh. Kind of sad since it was my first and only blog home.

The site's new home is Codeberg (ICYMI):

    Site: readbeanicecream.codeberg.page/
    RSS: readbeanicecream.codeberg.page

So update your bookmarks and RSS feeds!

I still like the surge project and will keep my surge related posts there for informational purposes.

  7. Visit https://geff.re/random/ to, you guessed it, visit any random page on my site.

More personal sites should have this. Makes exploration fun.

  13. Naty @eclecticpassions ·

It's the final stretch of Day 2 (Create Day) of the 2-day . It's been inspiring to see such a creative and skilled bunch of individuals all passionate about websites. I'm honoured and grateful to be part of it! There will be a demo/show-and-tell session soon where everyone will share what they worked on today. Can't wait! 👍

I just finished writing my post for Hyde's Over/Under series that will be published on his blog next Monday, April 6!

A bit nervous but also excited.

Definitely check out his interviews with other bloggers because it's very interesting and inspiring! I really hope mine is good enough…

Mainly to add my wiki blog on there, and note that I don't use DW anymore. I would like to add other RSS reader recs on there that are easy for noobs to use (don't require self hosting).

  18. Digital Self-Reliance: News & Information

The freedom to share information world wide is what made the internet great. So, why do we allow tech bros, social media, and AI to limit or even control what news and information see. 25. I've been really going down a rabbit hole of reading about the 90s/00s internet. I think the reason it is so interesting to me is to see what I perceive as a loss, the fact that the Internet has become so centralized to a handful of sites and has largely lost a lot of personality and individuality.

It's why I've been hard at work perfecting my own personal site, because I want to contribute to bringing that type of environment to the modern internet. I love looking through sites on
Nekoweb and Neocities because it gives that same feeling.

I saw a site the other day that had a page of interesting links the site owner had found, and I think I am going to start doing something like that on mine. Just a little place to gather cool or interesting stuff I find. Hopefully someone that goes to my site can jump off and find other interesting sites and keep the sense of exploration alive.

What do you think of it? I've been working very hard on it and it is only using html/css/js and no frameworks.

  30. Hey fedi) I want to make a collection of personal blogs with programming-related content (articles about coding and its culture, technical deep dives and maybe even philosophical thoughts about the stuff we do as software engineers). If a blog has an RSS feed - that would be highly appreciated too)

    My small list for now:
:blobcatlaptop: vkoskiv.com - I came there from the article featuring developing a driver for custom buttons on a laptop form 2005. Currently the blog doesn't have a lot of articles but looks really promising to me @vkoskiv

:blobcatlaptop: purplesyringa.moe/blog - algorithms, deep dives into Rust, sometimes JVM, extremely high-quality

:blobcatlaptop: evanhahn.com/blog - Useful scripts, interesting comparisons of different technologies

    Please boost

  32. Fedi friends, if you have a personal site with a bio/about me section, would you mind sharing a link with me? I'm a little blocked in the words department, and maybe seeing how other people wrote about themselves will get me unstuck… 😖

    :boost_ok: Thanks in advance! ❤️

EDIT: My bio is almost finished! Yay! Thanks again, y’all—your responses were so helpful (and so much fun to read through!)

  33. yippee i drew a button on my front page to link directly to my comics 🎉

If I find time, I need to fix the comics page before the zinefest this week, cuz I can do better than I did 2 years ago 😊 Probably just make it simpler, less text, less visuals of boxes in boxes.

  34. This feels like a long shot but --

Folks who make web sites: do you still use meta keywords? If so, have they worked for you? If yes, have the lack of such helped you? Do people still find you?

Asking because I'm planning when to rehaul my site and one of the things I use are meta keywords. For people who don't know, they look like this:

    <meta name="keywords" content="mastodon, glorious long posts, hashtags">

"Content" part is where you'd put keywords relevant to your site.

However it seems that nowadays they're not used, and in fact search engines like Google will consider you spam if you use them due to people abusing them after a few years of existence.

    developers.google.com/search/d

    yoast.com/meta-keywords/

(This is the part where I tell you no "Google sucks, degoogle!" speeches, please. Not only will I block you, but there are other search engines that likely have the same standards.)

I'm not really interested for ~SEO reasons~ but more to make sure that folks can find my work and my site. I would assume that the meta description tag can only do so much, no?

So again, my questions for fellow site makers: do you still use meta keywords? If yes, have they worked for you? If no, have the lack of such helped you? Do people still find you?

Any help appreciated or even insight! :happy_potato: :keanu_thanks:

#PersonalSites #webDev #SmallWeb #websiteDesign (I used the hashtags that I thought were relevant, apologies if not!)

  35. ok the skeleton of the fansite is VAGUELY up

    fudgecak.scumsuck.com/about/

Things I need to figure out:
    - preview picture??
    - page title like "{dynamic title} | Big Mountain Fudgecake" with that static site name trailing behind it
    - theme changer with prefers color-scheme
    developer.mozilla.org/en-US/do
    - oh yeah add favicon that's not the default astro thing lmao
    - how do i make it NOT minify my css/html so i can actually read it?? and so it stops adding stupid shit like "data-astro-cid-sz7xmlte" at the end of EVERY single link and image??? please sir i don't need to save 2kb by deleting all spacing and paragraphs

but otherwise yeah I can have fun reconstructing the 2007 metalsludge layout and not think about """collections""" yippeex3.mp5 i just want to make fake band sites for all my fake bands...... blease do you think ozzy osbourne knew what a jpeg let alone a "rehydrated island" was???

  36. Someone on tumblr asked me what I'm doing for my email address, so I was reminded to start the uses page on my wiki:

    wiki.scumsuck.com/uses

    tumblr.com/tempural/7947822416

TL;DC (too long didn't click) i dont know how to self-host email i just use my domain name to forward my emails to "[email protected]" to another inbox to look "professional" LMAO.

I'm surprised not more people do that, still living with the dang ol' yahoo.com addresses for their dang ol business emails :P But then again a lot of professional artists don't have a domain or personal site so... yaeh idk

Which reminds me that I should copy/paste, edit, or redirect the page on my main site to my wiki...

    scumsuck.com/uses

Like I do like having more control over the styling on my own plain html site but. I like editing stuff on my phone at 3am even more... I would only update my site twice a year if I had to sit down and wait 5 seconds for vscodium to boot up and then wait another 10 seconds for the shit to sync to the repository or whatever!!!!

  37. Showcase Saturday: Ge Ricci

Geri Ricci (Angela “Ge” Ricci) has been shaping the web since the mid 1990s, carrying a genuine love for writing clean markup and making the web accessible to all. She was born in São Paulo in 1966, fell in love with writing and drawing as a child, and later moved to France to build her career in visual communication and web standards. With over 32 years of experience, she still delights in crafting web pages, teaching, and speaking about the web in places like FFConf. Very cool!

Her personal style shines through her homepage where she introduces herself as being “married to HTML,” having “CSS as her sister,” and JavaScript as her “longtime lover.” That quirky phrasing hints at a deep appreciation for the web’s foundations: solid semantics, thoughtful markup, and the clarity that a well-built page can bring.

In her essay “The Web and the Butterfly Effect”, Geri explores how tiny early decisions, like choosing clean HTML, can ripple into massive effects later on. She champions progressive enhancement, reliability, and web performance as more than buzzwords. To her, they represent ethical design, user respect, and future proofing all wrapped up in one.

Her Work section features projects born more of passion than commission: a playful redesign for Open Web Advocacy and imaginative personal web experiments like “A Cuca,” a kind of visual blog mashup that blends design, storytelling, and curiosity. What they all have in common is intention and integrity, not flashy code, but thoughtful, human centered creation.

Geri’s website is full of little gems for anyone curious about design, accessibility, or the soul of the internet. She shares some really great advice on coding for those looking to expand their skills. Take a moment to explore! There’s a lot to learn, reflect on, and enjoy. ♥

  42. Website Features Starting Back Up

Hey everyone! I have some great news – I’m going to be doing features again! I really do want to continue them in some capacity, but I’m going to change things up a little bit. I’ve encountered a few folks who didn’t want to be featured in the past for one reason or another, and it’s understandable. So instead, I am opening feature submissions! Anyone who wants their website showcased and receive a little boost in visitors can submit their website to be featured here: https://sovereignweb.thecozy.cat/get-featured/

Features will be showcased on the front page of my Sovereign Web subdomain, as well as shared on all the Sovereign Web social media channels. I am hoping continuing features will not only be a great thing for personal website owners to gain more exposure, but also continue to help inspire newcomers.

I’m also opening up feature requests for webrings and communities that fall within the personal web niche.

This isn’t going to be part of any marketing campaign anymore. Features will be on a first come first serve basis. Some weeks there may be features, other weeks there may be none. It will all depend on the amount of submissions. But doing features were a lot of fun and I know that some people found Webring Wednesdays valuable as a resource.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this with you guys! It’s been a minute since I’ve posted here and I’m still working on different projects, just more at my own pace this time.

If anyone would like to kick off the first feature, come submit your site! The first person to request a feature will be posted this coming Saturday! 🙂
