As reliance on AI systems increases, so does the dependence, both individually and corporately, on the mega-corporations that provide these systems. If there is regulation regarding the provision of services by these systems (price changes, service restrictions, etc.), it can lead to the loss or necessity of rebuilding your entire business model.

I feel the same way. But I also feel trapped in a paradox, as I do want people creating quality content to get paid for their work; and I know there are costs to runnning video servers. But I also feel I don't have the money to support them, or pay per video or whatever.
So I want stuff to be free, and that people get paid for their work, and not to get ads. But this trio is inconsistent.So what's the solution? Would love to hear people's thoughts.

Ppl of Mastodon. Please help educate the normies about independent, small tech and self hosting. Not only fancy stuff like docker/VS etc and home servers, but cheap shared webspace online, small CMS, wikis, favourite federated or OS apps, (mine are Masto, Lemmy, Grav, Jekyll, Ghost and others). Introduce them to what is actually out here. Try not to expect total purity! They want to be free, not join a cult 😎😇

Ich habe mal nachgefragt, ob eher die User*innen-Sicht gemeint ist, oder auch technisches, aber ich gebe euch die Frage dennoch schonmal hier weiter. Wenn es was gutes gibt, super. I read and commented on @pluralistic's latest take already. Truly sorry to tell you, but Cory and I defer in the evaluation about the main reasons why people are captive, (actually they only feel that they are captivated) and how to properly react.
So, as I got this for now, "captive userbase" is people that went into a room and are knocking on it's wide open door sobering that they have no other choice than being violated day and night inside that open door prison they feel captivated in.
- Cory considers my position unemphatic, I consider speaking truth to imprisoned minds the first step to enable them to free themselves.
- He considers to speak in favor of investing money to loosen their chains an act of mercy, I consider it an act of improving their chains and making them feeling free in their newly elected open door prison, prolonging and improving the locked in effect.
- He considers it useful and a smart move to speak in favor and putting his name on the line, same as @mmasnick does, investing money to create another open door in the new walled open door prison garden called #bluesky, I prefer to invest every cent to show them that the gate is open and that there are plentiful gardens out there in the free as in freedom #freeWeb called the #fediVerse we build and improve for them every day.
"Captive users" is synonym to self imprisoned masochists who actually love the masters house, their house.

In 2022 I cut off a BUNCH of services I had paid for, some of them for many years, some I used on occasion but was always loyal. Why have I cut the cord?
Because these companies are killing the planet and everyone on it - and they're using us to do it. I am super not down with paying my measly dollars to the person poisoning me. Because they lack any ethics and over a MILLION people have died due to the negligence of just ONE social media company.
The more I remove, the better I feel.
In 2023 I cut:
- YouTube prime
- Amazon prime
- Google cloud services
- Google APIs
- Google Suite (drive, docs, email)
- Doordash
- The New York Times
- Substack
- Vans (footwear company)I downloaded all my #amazon #audioBooks into my own library. I replaced all the services I cut with #selfHosted software (where applicable). I channeled my new-found spare money into supporting:
- mstdn.ca & kolektiva.social
- #greenPeace
- Local independant media like @thenarwhal
- Supporting creators directlyThe more corporate branded scum I scour off the better I feel!
