My new paper can now be found on the #arXiv (https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.19424), in addition to my website. I haven't posted to the arXiv in a little while and things have changed. I was glad to see that we don't need to supply bbl files anymore and can finally just submit bib files instead. It was also nice to see a choice of #TeXLaTeX compilers, but still no #LuaLaTeX, so I did have to cut the Japanese text from the paper. I did used to have a way to do this with #PDFLaTeX but the LuaLaTeX way is so much cleaner I don't even want to mess with the old way now.

I have mixed feelings about the arXiv. I wish I didn't feel like I had to post there for legitimacy or exposure, and things haven't gotten evil enough for me to bail, but I'm feeling like it's time to think about how to live without it. Posting papers to my website is a start, but it doesn't seem like the whole solution.

I was using pdflatex to generate receipts for product purchases on my website, and I found it didn't have very good international multilingual unicode support. I found wkhtmltopdf, which works great for me. On a digitalocean debian server, I'm producing receipts that closely mimic my on-line HTML receipts in 16 languages. I highly recommend wkhtmltopdf.

I ran up against international limitations of tex / latex / pdflatex yesterday. I found wkhtmltopdf and got it working with all 13 languages that the Brain Computer Enterprises, Cooperative Inc. ( @bce ) website currently supports. Today, I am completing the conversion of the PDF order receipt generation from pdflatex to wkhtmltopdf.

I just installed an Obsidian plugin for multiformat export (github.com/mokeyish/obsidian-e…) which uses pandoc.
Pandoc, in turn, needs a pdflatex engine (as a default / recommended). Now, I am struggling to find a way to install pdflatex in Debian. The search for packages brought me to tracker.debian.org/pkg/texlive… which manpage mentions pdflatex, but after installation neither CLI nor Obsidian can detect such command.

Is there an easy way to get pdflatex, or should I switc to another pandoc-accepted engine, and which one?

Since #macOS broke all my known-to-work PDF workflows, I replaced all of them by using #pdflatex from #Debian package texlive-extra-utils. You wouldn't believe it, but that just works(TM).

@TeXUsersGroup That sounds amazing, inlining #Python into #TexLatex. Unfortunate that journals only ever accept pdflatex (and are often already clumsy at that).

Is there a way to 'dumbify' #LuaLatex into #pdfLatex? 🤔

\pdfinfoomitdate 1 % no /CreationDate and /ModDate in PDF output
\pdftrailerid{} % no /ID in PDF output

Suppose I have a pdf which looks nice and perfect when I open it with any installed pdf viewer. However, when I include it with includegraphics in #LaTeX some fonts are broken. What can cause this issue? I don't even know what to google.

Using #Emacs and #OrgMode as a binder for the pieces of my next novel and its makefile.

I know I could just use #Scrivener, but I find I like the notion fo outlining in the binder and then linking to the Markdown source for the draft.

I've been building my (GNU) makefile with <http://swcarpentry.github.io/make-novice/>. If I want to make PDFs I'll need to remove the old 'n busted #teTeX packages that come with #Slackware and install #TeXLive from slackbuilds.org because #pandoc needs #pdflatex.
