#Aotearoa are not perfect but they manage a settler + #indigenous #coexistence better than anywhere else i can think of?
As far as i can tell, part of what made it a bit easier than a lot of other #colonial nations is the #Māori were mostly a relatively homogenous group with one language? So it was feasible to bring back that language from the brink of extinction and make it the co-official language. #Pākehā (non indigenous New Zealanders) also participate in aspects of indigenous culture.

#CW #colonialism So I learned this week: Iwikatea is Māori for Balclutha. I never knew or thought to look, until I had to come here for something. Grateful I'm now becoming even more aware of how much colonialism robbed the language of Tangata Whenua and how much Te Reo I still lack. Doing all I can to help rectify this without taking up space at Māori language classes which I feel belong to those whose culture this is. But not to fault those Pākehā who do attend. #Pākehā #Māori #TeReo #Aotearoa
