New Zealand's Treaty of Waitangi debate is increasingly partisan - left and right voters are now 34 points apart in support for removing the Treaty from law.
In my latest post, I explore what the data shows and what it means for 2026. #nzpol #tetiriti

Please please _please_ submit today - final deadline - on the replacements to the RMA. Unsurprisingly, given those putting them forward, they are deeply problematic for both planet and people :(

For the Ōtautahi #Christchurch peeps, this should be cool :)

CW: Seymour SeesNothing #TeTiriti #NZPol
There is arrogant and there is arrogant - but this is the worst example I have seen - from an RNZ report this morning "ACT leader David Seymour told media after his bill's defeat that not one of the hundreds of thousands of submissions made to Parliament about it had actually addressed its contents."

There's a good news story that lurks beneath all the attacks on the ideal of partnership governance in Aotearoa, based on Te Tririti.
Which is that decades of decolonisation activism have effected significant structural change. Much more quickly than many of us thought possible in the 1990s. So much so that the corporatist right feel the need to lead an outsider campaign in support of a return to the subtly white supremacist government of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

we are closing in on home - unfortunately wallowing in 4 m swell from a couple of directions and fog but at least getting further north each day... #TAN2502 #Antarctica (noting that the image I casually grab a section of has #NOAA marked at the bottom 😟 )
We've had science talks all the way back interspersed with other fun stuff - tonite was quiz night. My contribution were questions on #TeTiriti and #SplitEnz (mindful that 70% of the team of from not NZ 😉 )

CW: NZPol Te Tiriti signing
"This is a narrative of the speeches at the Treaty of Waitangi signings in Waitangi, Hokianga and Kaitāia. The words are not in quotes as they are not verbatim and instead have been edited to be accessible to a wider audience. This means some details have been omitted, condensed or rephrased with modern terminology. "

CW: NZPol Shape of Democracy
"This rhetorical and ideological vagueness obscures a pivotal point: there is no such thing as a singular form of democracy.
...
It has been argued that te Tiriti is "of its time" and should therefore be subject to reinterpretation. And yet the same argument is rarely made about notions of democracy and equality that have been with us since 1852." -

📝 Aotearoa Treaty Principles Bill Submissions
Now, I generally try to keep "politics" out of the recaps because this is meant to be a positive space for the fans - but I do know that A LOT of our cast and crew are affected by this bill personally so I do want to throw this in there.
It looks like you don't actually have to be a resident of Aotearoa to submit your feelings on the bill.
Here is helpful linktree with things you can say and how to submit that I tracked down via a post Rachel House reposted: https://linktr.ee/nzhumanrights

Unprecedented number of submissions on Treaty Principles Bill, Denise Garland, Senior Journalist, Radio New Zealand
Public submissions close today, don't miss out on providing a view on an important constitutional change being proposed

Only a couple of days left to make a submission to the NZ parliament on the Treaty principles bill.
I am against the government coalition commitments to review, repeal and rewrite the Treaty principles. I recommend that it not go forward.

ASB and NZ Tennis need to be reminded that without #TeTiritiOWaitangi there’s no NZ #ASB Classic Tennis Tournament because there’s no #NewZealand.
Calling #TeTiriti controversial is calling into question #Aotearoa New Zealand’s existence, these people are such ignorant fools. #ToituTeTiriti -
I'm not sure if #Luxon believes this is getting #NewZealand back on the world stage but he's certainly getting #Aotearoa and #indigenous #Māori #TeTiriti rights noticed. #NZPol #ToitūTeTiriti #PBSNews

The US public news show, #PBSNewsHour, had a good piece today on the current government of Aotearoa-NZ's attempts this year to roll back Māori rights, and the massive protests in opposition. It's good to see this story being covered in some depth internationally.

In an embarrassing FU to the people and founding agreement of #Aotearoa #NewZealand without regard to the fact it is #TeTiriti that grants him a right to govern, #NZPol Coward in Chief Chris #Luxon will not attend Waitangi Day celebrations next year. Luxon will also not go to #Waitangi for talks with the Iwi Chairs Forum on the 4th, and won't be there for the annual political talks on the 5th either.

Finally got around to putting in my 4 points on the #TreatyPrinciplesBill, for the illumination and edification of the Justice Committee. If you haven't commented on it yet, you can do so here;
The closing date for submissions is Tuesday, 07 January 2025, at 11.59pm. It's better to get in before that, especially if you want to speak to the committee. But even a late one, if it's original and thoughtful, can still be considered at the committee's discretion.
