  1. I was told by my grandfather, an #ornithologist, that they introduced the black stork back to Austria. They took the effort to guide them with aeroplanes to the places of summer settlement.

However, when they inspected them, they found that they were blind on one eye.

It turns out the 'experts' had put a GPS location tracker under their wing. That is where they put their head to sleep. And one should know that these birds are sensitive to the earth's magnetic field. [2/4]

  6. Dear friends,
Who knows an #ornithologist I can ask a question to about American Robins? I have a series of images that shows an adult Robin, after coming back to the nest, reaching down with its beak and pulling a worm out of the gullet of a nestling and wonder if this is known behavior.

    Thanks,
    ESM

  9. Sam Lee traveled #ireland and #scotland for 15 years recording ancient #indigenous singing. He is also an #ornithologist #environmentalist and award-winning #poet and #vocalist. Though his ‘pad’ is in London, his heart is in the woodlands of Sussex. This interview will get you to #liminal spaces:

  12. AOS to abandon eponymous names for birds! americanornithology.org/americ

If I'm forgiven a pun, this news isn't breaking so much as a step toward healing.

This long-time member, career #ornithologist, and #Fellow of the @AmOrnith could not be more proud of the courage, leadership, and moral clarity it took to make this decision.

  17. In the late 80s, my now-retired #ornithologist husband spent time bird-watching with #margaretatwood (whom he called Peggy) and her husband, Graeme. Occasionally, he even stayed with them in their #toronto home. Fast forward to today: I am mailing a hand-written note to this literary giant, thanking her for speaking out against the #fundamentalism that defined my first 40 years - and asking her to be a guest on my Divorcing Religion #podcast . Wish me luck!

  22. #Bird Mastodon, I need your help. What bird makes this sound? They (at least two, maybe three) start shouting after sundown, and I really want to know what they are.

  27. Harrison Bruce "Bud" Tordoff (2nd from right) with his ground crew & his P-51, Upupa epops.

Bud was an #ornithologist, later PhD & museum curator, and Upupa epops is the silly-sounding scientific name of the Eurasian hoopoe.

Bud was an aviator ace: 5 confirmed air victories.

  30. Hello Mastodoners,

Evidently we need to keep introducing ourselves here to start building up those networks again.

    I am Tim –– #ecologist, #ornithologist, and Associate Professor at #OklahomaStateUniversity and current #President of the #wilsonornithologicalsociety.

    I dig #birds, #landscapes, #science #HigherEd #CriticalThinking #SecularHumanism, #mentoring, #DEIJ, etc. Still active as @Seiurus on another site.

My frequent furry sidekick is Nellie.

    I will follow you!

  35. @fazleskhan I've always wanted to play Tigris & Euphrates, Viticulture, & Ars Magica (heard great things about them), but haven't managed it yet. Wingspan is one of my faves though- I get each new expansion as they come out. Being an #ornithologist makes it kind of mandatory though 😆 I have downloaded Ars Magica & need to read through it at some point. I have heard that their rules for magic are exceptional. Never enough time to do everything you want to do!
