A loon returns to his territorial pond, calling for his mate and making a long, smooth landing on his belly. 😁 🖤 🤍 🖤
The legs are so far back on a loon's body that if he'd tried to set down on his feet, he would have faceplanted. What he does instead is use his legs and feet, still stretched out behind him, as brakes so he can slow down.

Fascinating Loon Fact: this is the only way a loon can "walk." They're unable to walk on dry land because their legs are set so far back on their bodies that if they even managed to stand (which they can't), they'd fall on their faces. Instead, the function of their legs and feet is to allow them to paddle through the water, where they spend virtually all their lives, and to help propel them forward and upward from the water when they want to fly. 🖤🤎🤍❤️

So how about a summary of my work at Prudhoe Bay this past week? :D
It was a joint project between USFWS, USGS, and Wildlife Conservation Society. We implanted 19 GPS/GSM transmitters in common eiders, Pacific loons, and red-throated loons. In addition, when weather interfered with boating to nearby islands, I assisted with efforts to apply neck collar trackers on Cackling geese. We completed the work in less than 6 days. The high resolution data will supplement other information from remote nest cameras and guide further studies on population interconnectivity, feeding habits, population stability, and migration paths.

I’m at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. We have 4 transmitters left to deploy in common eider, after deploying 8 in red-throated and Pacific loons and 7 in eiders. Sea ice and fog have hampered capture efforts all day but cleared up tonight. Gonna be a long night but I’m optimistic that we’ll complete all the surgeries.

I work with both #Undergraduate and #Masters students to investigate varied questions about #Loons, #Chickadees, #WhireThroatedSparrows, #Giraffes, #Whales, and #Wildebeest.
