We recently learnt the term "skill regression" from an informative, compassionate short by an AuDHD content creator (Dr Kojo Sarfo).
It is simultaneously:
- relieving to know there's a term for what we're experiencing;
and
- incredibly sad to know that so very many others have experienced, are experiencing, and/or will experience this 😔
#SkillRegression #neurodivergent #neurodivergence #NeurodivergentBurnout #neurospicy #spoonie
Edit: Removed a duplicate this. Unrelated side note: there is a song by Late Night Alumni called The This This.

CW: Mental health update (neutral good); NHS EOEGS appointment (venting; anxiety)
Hey folks 🩷
Just doing a quick update to let you all know that we're still here, and we're still recovering from (and coping with) depression, anxiety, neurodivergent burnout, and migraines.
It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but we're doing a little better and keeping ourselves occupied, whilst also allowing ourselves time to rest... though sometimes Hannah has to remind us to pause or stop when we get hyperfocussed 😅
On another note, we've got our 4th appointment with the NHS East of England Gender Service (EOEGS) tomorrow, which we're totally not entirely anxious about 😅🥺
This one is to get a 2nd surgical recommendation from another NHS medical "specialist". We need 2 before we can even join any surgical waiting list, and we already got the 1st from our 3rd appointment... back in March 2024.
Technically we should have had that all sorted back during our 2nd appointment in August 2023, when they agreed that we did indeed meet the diagnostic criteria for gender incongruence (ICD-11, HA60), but NHS gender identity clinics (GICs) are a crumbling anachronism, designed intentionally to make the process drawn-out, difficult, and full of gatekeeping 😔
Of course, they couldn't just accept the gender incongruence diagnosis we got privately in July 2021... from someone literally recognised by the UK government as a gender specialist for the purposes of applying for a gender recognition certificate, and who still works for the NHS 😑😮💨🤦♀️
Plus the EOEGS then took nearly 6 months to send the final report and letter to my NHS GP before booking this 4th appointment and getting started on other requests.
On top of that, they made several factual errors in the report too 🤦♀️ We sent it back to them and our GP, with highlighted corrections. Our GP was most grateful for this, as it highlighted that the responsibility of Individual Funding Requests (IFRs) lies with the gender clinic, not the patient's GP.
So, yeah. We're a bit anxious right now 😅😖

CW: Verbal shutdowns; possible migraines; health; neurodivergence
Today we learnt that there's an overlap between neurodivergence (especially autism) and migraines.
We've had several instances recently, particularly where we've pushed ourselves too far, where we've experienced what we thought were neurodivergent verbal shutdowns, as we're AuDHD.
We'd experienced such things for at least a couple of decades, even before our ASD diagnosis (still waiting on the ADHD one though). We previously attributed it to normal fatigue. Then we'd describe it as a language centre collapse (or a full batting collapse).
However, it was never clear why painkillers like ibuprofen lysine or naproxen (NSAIDs), paracetamol, or codeine phosphate always helped to both prevent or alleviate symptoms.
Warning signs for us have typically been:
- Increasing pain in middle of forehead or above eyes
- Increased light sensitivity.
- We've often had to wear our prescription sunglasses to keep working.
- Feeling more fatigued and finding it difficult to focus.
- Finding it harder to understand spoken or written language.
- Slurred speech and difficulty writing.
- Making silly errors and typos.
Once it gets fully going, symptoms include:
- Aphasia.
- Trouble with body coordination.
- Partial or total verbal shutdown.
- One time Evie couldn't even think coherent sentences, so our headmate Hannah told us what to write to communicate with our wife.
All this time, we'd been thinking this was solely a neurodivergent overload issue. But now we've found out it might actually be some form of migraine, sand this is potentially something we can get meds for (such as gepants).
We intend to book an appointment with our GP about it to investigate further, as it's happening increasingly often, especially since we entered AuDHD burnout.
For further context, headaches are common in our family and our sister has migraines with auras.

CW: AuDHD burnout update: likely not just burnout
We knew we were in AuDHD burnout, but as we were feeling so completely physically fatigued after the slightest physical activity, we started logging our temperature (using an ear thermometer) a few times daily.
Turns out our average temperature has fairly steadily risen from 36.8°C to 37.9°C.
It's not enough to be considered more than a low grade fever at present, but an infection might explain at least some of rising fatigue we've been feeling, despite otherwise resting so much.
We'll keep up regular monitoring, just in case it rises further.
Yay for a double whammy 😮💨🤦♀️
To highlight how bad our brain fog currently is, by the way, it's taken us at least 30 minutes to compose this post 😑

CW: AuDHD burnout and mental health update
We woke up at around 0750, cos we forgot to turn off our alarm, despite it being a non-working day for us.
The most physically demanding things we've done have been walking between the kitchen, the living room, and our office.
All we've done mentally is a few tasks and a bit of chatting.
And yet we feel mentally foggy and slow, and physically exhausted. Also little executive function or focus, and having memory issues, higher anxiety, and higher RSD. Apparently these are incredibly common for this type of burnout.
Pretty sure we experienced auditory hallucinations this week, believing that someone rang our doorbell at 0430 and 0630. We are not expecting this. Only realised they weren't real when talking about it with wife.
Kinda feels like when you've caught a nasty flu, minus the sore throat, coughing, or fever. Joints aching though, just like flu.
