  1. I just love #TurnBased #games so much more than anything else. Especially today, where everything feels fast, loud and overwhelming, I need games that actually give me time to #think.

With #RealTime you react, with #TurnBased you #plan. That is a huge difference. I sit there, analyse the #situation, think three moves ahead, and when my #strategy pays off, it feels genuinely rewarding.

On top of that: #TurnBasedGames are almost always more #complex and #deep. #XCOM, #BattleTech, #TacticsOgre, these games demand real #thinking. No muscle memory, no reflexes, just pure #strategy.

In a world full of #notifications, #stress and constant #overstimulation, this is almost like #meditation for me.

    My #pace, my #decisions, my #game.

  15. Some of the harangues I see about stepping up to the plate regarding Hands-Off demonstrations come across to me as ableist.

I went to a demonstration yesterday. I purposely did not pick a huge one because I most likely would have been overstimulated.

"Oh, don't worry. You went. You're one of the 'good ones.'"

Haha, nope. I did what I could do, just like some of my sibling do what they can, and unfortunately, what they can does not include going to any demonstrations because they have bigger overstimulation issues than I do, or they have other conditions, like agoraphobia.

  16. Brain is everywhere! 🤯

I guess that getting the news of needing another serious surgery has thrown me off my game more than I realized at first. Sure, I panicked. I freaked out, knowing I need yet another hip sugery, knowing I will have a very restricted life again for at least 6 weeks... I was upset, I felt disappointed, sad, and even angry. And then I thought that it settled down a bit. I felt like I was accepting the situation. It's not like I could change the situation in any way anyway. I mean, the socket is coming loose and it needs to be reattached. So better sooner, rather than later... But then, my ADHD started to explode! Like my thoughts were on fire, as they were before I started taking the meds. Sometimes I wonder how I managed to get through the day before I had them, as even days like these, where the brain feels like it's high on something, while I am on my meds, I struggle so much to get by. I struggle to do my chores, to focus on things that I want to do, or need to do, and I can't even seem to enjoy the hobbies that usually relax me. […]

  17. Time spent in nature can boost physical and mental well-being

    January 2, 2024

"Spending time outdoors in green spaces has been linked with myriad physical and mental health benefits, including lower mortality, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Heather Eliassen.

"Eliassen, professor of nutrition and epidemiology, was among the experts quoted in a December 14 Pop Sugar article about the health impacts of nature and being outside. She explained that exposure to green space has been linked to better sleep, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of chronic disease—likely because people who spend more time in green spaces also report higher levels of exercise.

"'Green spaces can be destinations for walking or bicycling, as well as space for play, and among children, green-space exposure is linked to more playtime and less screen time,' Eliassen told Pop Sugar.

"She also said that spending time in nature has been linked to better mental health and a decreased risk of psychiatric disorders among adults and children.

"'[Time spent outdoors] provides a combination of stimulation of different senses and a break from typical #overstimulation from urban environments,' she said. 'Exposure to green space results in mental restoration and increased positive emotions and decreased anxiety and rumination. Improved mindfulness can result from exposure to green space as well.'

"Eliassen noted that even city dwellers and people who work indoors can pursue and reap the health benefits of the natural world. Spending time in urban spaces like parks and gardens has been linked with improved health, according to Eliassen and other experts quoted in the article.

"'If there are some green spaces a short or medium distance from home, try walking or biking to the green space to get the benefits of exercise while getting [there],' she said. 'Or, find green space you could incorporate into your commute to or from school or work.'"

  18. CW: minor mentions of weed and self-harm

I don't really understand what causes my #overstimulation. I don't think I've been paying enough attention to it for long enough to say what makes it more or less likely to occur. There are days where the same noise might not bother me at all or so minimally that it doesn't affect me in any noticeable way.

Am I picking up on more sound than usual or is there actually a lot more noise? It doesn't feel so much like there’s actually more things out there making noise as it feels like the volume of existence was increased and sped up.

This is the kind of day where trying to focus my mind is so grating that I'm going to go into a complete meltdown if I don't back off. Everything I do feels prickly. Everyone is irritating me. It's the kind of day where I'd like to bash my own head against the wall because the noise and the pain and the sense that I'm trapped in my body won't let up.

I’ve got my headphones back on, took something for my headache, and I'm going to smoke weed and try my best to reset.
At least I seem to have learned to know when to fold.

  19. Why Do Autistic People “Make A Scene?”

    Because you don’t bloody listen.

Photo by Jason Rosewell on Unsplash

Going to events can be challenging when you are autistic. It is definitely challenging for me. I have noise sensitivity and social anxiety. I’ve recently learned that I’m liable to crash if I’m overstimulated during a social event. Fun!

I’m going to talk about a specific event here. It is a brunch that happens monthly and is for bisexual people. They actually don’t card for sexual orientation, but if you’re not an ally, you’re not going to enjoy yourself. This event used to happen in a locale that I would be able to tolerate. I’ll note that there is no social situation that is absolutely without risk for me, but some places are definitely worse than other places.

I’ve actually talked about this event in a prior article:

    https://www.yourautisticlife.com/2024/06/09/when-being-social-destroys-you

After I wrote that article, I went into the Discord server to tell folks about what happened to me the day before, and I referred to the article I linked to above.

Even before that event happened, I had suggested another location to the people in the Discord server. I was told that my suggestion would be forwarded to the person responsible, but this did not happen. Generally, speaking, I think it is fallacious to insist that unless you can come up with a solution, then you mustn’t complain. However, I do prefer to present a solution when I can, and this time I could. I had been to this other place before and did not recall much trouble there.

Note that I’m not the only member of the group who is not fond of the new location for the brunches. Other members have perhaps not crashed like I did, but they have complained about the noise, or the subpar food offerings. Some of them complained before in the event chat on Meetup, but they weren’t heard either.

So, today, I went into the chat for the Meetup event and copied and pasted what I had put into the Discord server, minus the references to my article. It was a relatively restrained message. I laid the facts, and said that I had suggested another location, and that as far as I could tell nothing happened with my suggestion.

As far as I am concerned, I did not make a scene, but I’m half-expecting some ableist idiot to come over and accuse me of such a thing. I really thought about making a scene, however.

Why would I make a scene?

Because, so far, nobody who can make a change has listened to my complaints and the complaints of other members. This is why. We autistic people are always in the minority, and we end up being overlooked. Our needs are ignored, until, one day, we figure that we’re only going to be heard if we make a scene.

I thought about it, but I did not. I don’t know about next time.

  20. Ah crivens.

Totaly broke down yesterday. As much as I like to think I'm a highly functioning autistic person (non diagnosed), I had every nut and bolt shaken yesterday. Zoning out, being antisocial at a conference is not the best way to meet people, let me tell you. I was not ready. Underestimated how bad I really am underneath and how fragile the cover of confident cool I try to keep. Still, we learn. And the turtle moves.

I was never big on the bar scene but when you're in your early 20s and live in #montreal...

That said, I only now realize why I would often get up and leave the bar, either to take a walk around the block or to sit around the corner for fifteen minutes.
