If you want to know more about just how the NHS is failing trans people, you should consider watching the below video by Abigail Thorn of PhilosophyTube & reading "The Transgender Issue: An Argument For Justice" by Shon Faye.

So while I know I probably should feel grateful that I've been seen at all by the NHS, I can't help but feel loathing & anger at a system that is deliberately designed to be slow, limited & hidden behind unnecessary gatekeeping.

Returning to NHS care, please note that it won't offer me any of the following:
β’ Face Feminisation Surgery (FFS) ~Β£10-20K
β’ Voice Feminisation Surgery (VFS) ~Β£5k
β’ Either an orchi(d)ectomy (~Β£5K) or Peritoneal Pull-Though (PPT) vaginoplasty (N/A)If I do want these, I'll have to go private π

I'll need a GRC to update my birth certificate & my marriage certificate.
Its requirements include:
β’ A gender incongruence/dysphoria diagnosis.
β’ Living as my affirmed gender for >=2 years. It might take them 22 WEEKS to even look at any application π

Please note that I'M one of the luckier ones.
I was able to afford going part-private (GenderCare) to begin gender affirming care, including a private diagnosis for updating documents & for starting the clock ticking on getting a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).

AFAIUI, this is all before they'll start to offer me HRT or surgical options via the NHS.
Voice coaching & more laser/electrolysis options are available, but only if I "pass" their assessments...
... & are based on funding at local levels, with further waits for approval.

So, in another ~8 months, someone else from Cambridge or Nottingham will pretty much ask me the same questions & then tell me whether they'll provide me care via their pathway.
So about ~26 months for them to tell me if I'm trans enough for care π

What's really bad is when you consider that I'm actually being seen QUICKLY by NHS England standards, as the EOEGS is a pilot scheme to reduce waiting times.
I've "only" been on the NHS waiting list since the end of May 2021 (~18 months).
This is speedy by NHS standards.

Please note that I have zero complaints about the lovely nurse. She was kind, considerate & empathetic, as well as openly acknowledging the NHS system issues.
However, if I were solely waiting on the NHS for gender affirming care, I'd still be waiting for basic HRT.

However, this 1st appointment:
β’ Was by a nurse.
β’ Didn't result in a diagnosis of gender incongruence / dysphoria.
β’ Will require a 2nd appointment in ~ 8 months' time to tell me whether they'll accept me on to the EOEGS care pathway.π

I was also asked typical things like:
β’ What I want from the NHS.
β’ What my transition goals/hopes are.
β’ My experience of dysphoria. In other words, everything you'd expect from a pathologised, diagnostic approach to assessing whether someone is trans.

In terms of questions, they were pretty standard admin & diagnostic ones.
E.g.,
β’ Admin stuff like names, documents etc.
β’ Timeline of coming out.
β’ Memories of gender dissonance.
β’ Family support.
β’ Gamete storage.
β’ Mental/physical health.2/13

So, I had my 1st appointment today with the East of England Gender Service (EOEGS).
I wrote about suddenly getting offered the appointment previously on bird site, but I want to advise roughly what happened in it while it's fresh in my mind before I forget.
