  1. IMO Amnesty International is perpetrating discrimination of the users of Twibright Links lightweight web browser not equipped with JavaScript and IMO Amnesty International are hypocrites: they pose as if fighting for human rights, but they themselves IMO perpetrate discrimination and censorship and Amnesty International IMO violates the basic human right to receive information.

    I recommend:
    1) Don't send Amnesty International any donations.
    2) Tell other people about the behaviour of Amnesty International.
    3) Boycott Amnesty International.

Their website consists of a grid of pictures and text. You don't need JavaScript to display that and even if you did, lack of JavaScript would just mean reduced functionality, not blocking of whole website.

This may IMO impact marginalized individuals (people living in poverty, people in developing countries, refugees, dissidents) who cannot afford to buy a powerful device with enough RAM (cf. recent RAM price crisis) to run a resource hungry web browser with JavaScript and exacerbate the digital divide.

IMO Amnesty International is joining the camp of perpetrators of digitalitarian digitatorship, where citizens are required to submit to an ever increasing amount of surveillance and tracking and required to submit to an extortion to purchase ever more expensive electronic devices.

    I feel

    s t r o n g c o n t e m p t

    towards Amnesty International.

  2. @screwlisp @prahou Actually links2 and links it's the same web browser, Links version 2 ("text" Links is Links version 2 without graphics compiled in, "graphical" (actually text/graphical) Links is Links version 2 with graphics compiled in where you can turn the graphics on using -g), I don't know why distributions call the binary links2 when the name of the program is links.

  3. @reiddragon @gettie @screwlisp @prahou I don't understand what you mean. I don't know the implementation details of sixels and whether it would open a can of worm regarding reliability of the graphics interface.

My experience with Linux terminal is that it is unreliable even in simple text mode (for example sometimes I edit a long text commandline that wraps at the end of line and time to time, unpredictably, it just goes nuts and starts overwriting itself and generally goes crazy and I have to close the terminal and open another one). Also terminal resizing is chronically unreliable and terminal detection too. I wonder what would happen if we add sixels to that? Get unreliability on next level?

  5. Links 2, a graphical browser I wanna build upon. And a quick look at how ELinks is doing.

Blog post about Links and ELinks browsers, oddly and awkwardly containing even a reprint of old software patches.

  6. Should the Links website put a blockade (boycott) on the US🇺🇸 regime as a punishment and visibility action for the alleged IMO organized murder attempt, abduction and torture of Czech citizen Martin Pavlata IMO by the US regime via the ICE organization?

    blisty.cz/art/131557-nejezdete

Soft blockade - skippable, symbolic boycott
Hard blockade - cannot be skipped, requires a VPN to bypass this boycott

This is meant just as a blockade on the Links website itself, no change to the Links program and is likely to be more symbolic than have a practical effect, because I assume most installations are done via package manager of the OS.

Please consider the fact that roughly 50% US voters voted for Trump.

  7. (CZ, DE🇩🇪 , KM🇰🇭 below) Mocking me that "I feel extremely strong contempt towards everything", when it's a lie and I feel extremely strong contempt mostly towards perpetrators of genocides, murders, abductions, robberies, and abuses of human rights. That's what a person wrote and added that I am also author of Links (or Ronja? I don't remember). I already blocked them.

  10. I made Czech state gazette Collection of Laws partially accessible for users of the Links lightweight web browser.

    archive.org/details/sbirka_zak

    It has 28 GB.

IMO the Czech regime discriminates against users of the Links, Lynx, Dillo, and Midori browsers by not allowing them access to the Collection of Laws.

It can be viewed directly online from Links as individual PDF§s. You have to click SHOW ALL, select a year or decade, e.g. 2023.tar, and next to that click View Contents and select a PDF, or download the whole tar.

It's downloaded from the old Collection of Laws system for the years 1945-2023, and from the new system, about 7% of the year 2024.

There are no current versions of the acts, which are constantly changing, but the promulgated (original) texts and promulgated changes. There is no usual numbering like XXX/YYYY Sb. (Coll.), but files with numbers increasing with time, with the exception of 1993 where they have it divided into two blocks.

At least now we have this because without it, users of Links, Lynx, Dillo, Midori do not have access to Czech laws from home at all.

The regime implements discrimination by displaying only JavaScript-generated on-the-fly content and the link to the PDF cannot be clicked with right mouse button and no URL can be copied, where one could download the PDF.

    I feel

    e x t r e m e l y s t r o n g c o n t e m p t

  11. Udělal jsem Sbírku Zákonů pro uživatele Linksu.

    archive.org/details/sbirka_zak

    Má to 28 GB.

    e x t r é m n ě s i l n é o p o v r ž e n í

    když je situace takováto.

  12. @phl @masek I mean this in the red circle, which I can't find on Github pages (not even a text link saying "Download"). This is the webpage of our FOSS Links browser. I assume many people will hear about our Links browser and think "OK - let's give it a try - to give it a try I need to download it first. Where can I download it? Oh, a huge green rectangle saying "Download"! That looks like the thing I have to click to download it!", then they click it and there is a selection of versions to download, binary vs. source download, pre-download prerequisities (libraries). But the important thing is they know where to click to even get into the download section. And I can't find that in the Github interface.

So when I can't find the Download button I can't download it. And when I can't download it, I can't use it. So I abandon the program and google up some alternative to it.

  13. Once in a while I'll use #links2 and get on #piefed via a browser just cause. Also scheduling posts on piefed is keeping #peertube @peertube alive.

  14. All bug trackers seem to be too complicated, so I made one myself in less than 300 lines. I imported the issues from GitHub and it seems to work well in and .

    bug.dillo-browser.org/

Issues are stored in plain Markdown files with some special headers in a git repository. They get rendered to HTML when pushing a new commit to the bugtracker repo.

The whole thing is less than 300 lines of shell script and awk. It uses no javascript or databases.

  15. Okay...how do other folks decide between different terminal-based web browsers?

Lynx is the one that gets mentioned the most on fedi. It also has by far the highest popcon on Debian.

It seems Lynx is part of the same family tree as links, links2, and elinks. Trying all of them, I really don't see much difference between Lynx and Links: the only differences I notice are that they use different default colors for text, and links has a smaller file size.

Links2 can run in either graphical or terminal mode. I can't use the graphical mode due to a lack of dark mode. The terminal version of link2 seems identical to links: is there even a difference?

Elinks, when used as a web browser, seems nearly identical to the other three, aside from a different color scheme. Its website claims it supports CSS and JS, but I haven't seen those actually make a difference on a real website. Elinks can also work as a gemini and gopher browser, which is a nice perk.

Outside of the links/lynx/elinks family, Debian has a few more terminal browsers.

Edbrowse can let you load the text of a website and then edit it? It also works with geminispace.

Netrik does not appear to work with https: it works fine with plain http.

w3m, with the image extension, can display images inline in the terminal, which looks weird. Without the image extension, I don't notice much difference between w3m any the links family, aside from again a different color scheme.

Overall, I don't see what makes Lynx stand out from all the other terminal browsers. Yet both fedi and Debian users seem to strongly prefer it. What criteria are other fedicreatures using to compare terminal web browsers?

  16. I had an idea for a small project I could try to do.

A basic web browser for Android with no JS support, no CSS support, and only basic support for HTML. Essentially, Links2 Mobile.

Based on my track record for maintaining software, it probably won't go anywhere, but can anyone think of a good name?

    Boosts are appreciated.

    #FOSS #Links2 #Programming

  17. #ELinks with `-dump-color-mode 2 -colors 1` has colors and numbered links

#links2 with `-html-numbered-links 1` is monochrome, but has numbered links

#Lynx too, but its output looks more messy to me.

#w3m doesn't highlight links and doesn't output link URLs at all.

#Pandoc can't handle table layouts, which unfortunately are still very common in commercial emails.

#HTML2Text (the C++ tool, gitlab.com/grobian/html2text) does a decent job and supports bold & underline in `less` and NeoMutt's pager.

  18. @prahou What is the difference between #links2 and #links2gang? #links2gang refers to the group of people while #links2 refers to the browser itself?
