  1. Just to keep this here, in prep for :

    > There are some patriotic citizens who sincerely hope that America will win the war - but they also hope that Russia will lose it; and there are some who hope that America will win the war, but that England will lose it; and there are some who hope that America will win the war, but that Roosevelt will lose it.

  2. Just went after hundreds of URLs that didn’t work anymore (updating them to point to archive.org).

While this is routine work for every site owner, it’s astonishing to see how many peers and orgs throw away links—some of them with excellent profiles, others the result of hard work of DevRel teams.

Extra pain to see this when they didn’t own the domain (GitHub, Medium, some such).

Make a point to always set up redirects. It protects your work—and saves others some time.

  3. Been in touch with some "Archivist" working on a comprehensive archive of all the Cybersix material...

They plan to release like a BitTorrent or something to make it easy to share and prevent "Link Rot"...

Excuse me, I'm not that technical...

  4. Link rot continues to be a real scourge on the 'net; in fact, it's worse now than it was when people starting warning about it 30 years ago.

That's why I'm proud that many pages on my main site have not changed in 20 years.

More seriously, donate to the Internet Archive, so they can preserve more of the 'net for posterity.

  5. A Pew Research Center study found that 38% of webpages from a decade ago, and about 25% of pages sampled across the decade, are now inaccessible; our analysis shows that the Wayback Machine has rescued roughly 15% of those otherwise dead pages.

  9. Machines can only remember what remains.

The popular story about the internet is that it remembers everything.
My experience has been the opposite.

Websites disappear. Forums vanish. Domains expire. Entire conversations fade away.

    What remains becomes the record.

  11. We've teamed up with Automattic to fight link rot on the open web. Check out the new Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer for WordPress. The free plugin preserves pages, redirects broken links to archived versions, and helps ensure the web keeps its memory.

“It’s very important that websites have a memory," said Alexander Rose of Automattic. "When links go dead, in effect, the truth goes dead—especially in the age of AI,”

  12. Did you know that nearly 40% of web pages that existed in 2013 are already gone? Link rot is real, and the "cloud" is just someone else's computer that might be turned off tomorrow.

This is why self-hosting and local backups aren't just a hobby anymore - they're digital archeology. If you love a piece of information, save it. Don't assume the internet will remember it for you. That's why I'm building my NAS right now.

  13. I have an idea for mitigating #linkrot:
A script that takes a #html file (probably blogpost), finds external links, and for each link it creates a popup that appears on mouse hover.
This popup includes the link, it's title, publish date, tl;dr (written by you), and buttons to open the link in archive.is or Wayback Machine. Optionally a paywall warning.
The tl;dr would be useful not only for cases where the original link is dead, but also to signify why are you linking to that page in particular - something that is often done by having a whole sentence as the link text.
This script should only be ran once, and would not require any client-side code.

Is this a good idea? Does something like this already exist? Feedback appreciated :) :boost_requested:

  14. Just stumbled over this useful chart on the #SPARQL Query Execution Sequence by @dbeckett . The slides of his talk on SPARQL 1.1 from 2011 are still perfectly accessible online (dajobe.org/talks/201105-sparql). Many of the external resources, however, have been moved (but can still be found just by googling) #linkrot

Thanks to the open and transparent license, the infographic could be stored on #wikicommons as well (commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil)

  16. @stadtwirtschaft @Mareike2405 To be fair haben sie eine Email an alle angemeldeten Nutzer_innen geschrieben, in der sie zum Export aller Daten bis zum 15. Dezember 2025 “einladen” (sic).

  19. ⚡️Linkwarden: The Self-Hosted Bookmark Manager That Solved a Problem I Didn’t Know I Had

Thank you, Linux Unplugged and Jupiter Broadcasting @ironicbadger, for introducing me to Linkwarden—a FOSS gem that will change how I save, share, and preserve the web.

Like many of you, I’ve been using browser bookmarks for years. I’d save articles, tutorials, and interesting links, only to find them gone when I finally got around to reading them. Link rot is real, and it’s frustrating. But until I heard about Linkwarden linkwarden.app/ on Linux Unplugged jupiterbroadcasting.com/, I didn’t realize how much I needed a better solution.

I used to think, “Browser bookmarks are fine,” and honestly, backing them up manually from time to time isn’t a real trouble—just a slight inconvenience. My problem is that I experience massive link rot when looking into two-year-old links, often with interesting subjects on small sites—they are often just gone when I want to recall them. The problem is that saving the link isn’t saving any of the information.

But Linkwarden @linkwarden isn’t just another bookmark manager—it’s a preservation powerhouse, a collaborative hub, and a self-hosted dream. And thanks to the folks at Jupiter Broadcasting, I now understand why it’s a game-changer.

I haven’t started hosting it yet, but I definitely will, and I hope some of you out there will find it useful too.
Thanks to @daniel31x13 for making a awesome tool :heart_cyber: ⚡️.

    factuel.univ-lorraine.fr/node/

Heureusement on peut le retrouver ici :
    factuel.univ-lorraine.fr/artic

    Dommage !
