Link Fresh - a tool to fight against link rot on my blog
I was inspired by some articles I've read and decided to make a tool to help archive pages that I link out to.

Yesterday I added the page about Juliette to the Web Archive by hand.
Now her story stays there even if the domain goes, or the hosting, or me, or whoever renews it after me.
My son will be able to open it and read it in any of the three languages. The photos got archived too, and that is the part that matters to me most.

It pulls the images, walks through everything and makes a full copy. At least it looks right on mine.

Nog één keer de Livius Nieuwsbrief
Een paar weken geleden besloot ik dat alle dode links uit deze blog moesten worden verwijderd of verbeterd. Niemand heeft voordeel bij dode links. Niet de universitair docent wiens persoonlijke pagina een ander adres kreeg, want een wetenschapper moet bereikbaar zijn. Niet het museum dat van naam veranderde, want dat wil informatie delen en moet dus online vindbaar blijven. Niet het publiek dat informatie zoekt. En ook ikzelf niet, want als er veel dode reeks in een website zitten, krijgt die van zoekmachines een lagere ranking en wordt die site minder gevonden. En ja, ik ben wel zo ijdel dat ik gelezen wil worden.
Linkrot
Links verouderen, om allerlei redenen. Dat staat bekend als linkrot. Er zijn programmaatjes die dode links signaleren, dus het traceren is niet moeilijk. Ik heb echter heel wat verloren kwartiertjes besteed aan het veranderen van de ruim 7500 pagina’s en blogjes die samen de Mainzer Beobachter vormen.
Dat moest handmatig, want er is geen manier om geautomatiseerd te zien of bijvoorbeeld “Berenike” verwijst naar een havenstad, een Egyptische vorstin of een keizerlijke maîtresse. Het is wat repetitief werk maar ik beleef er plezier aan de Tweede Hoofdwet van de Thermodynamica in de praktijk te zien functioneren: je blijft de onvermijdelijk toenemende chaos vóór door er energie in te steken.
Ontbrekende redirects
En je ontdekt nog eens wat. Bijvoorbeeld dat databanken als de EDCS patsboem worden verplaatst, zodat allerlei links patsboem incorrect zijn en informatie patsboem onvindbaar wordt. Dit speelt ook bij de voortdurend veranderende pagina’s van universiteitsmedewerkers. Het verbijsterende is dat dit probleem simpel is op te lossen, namelijk door het plaatsen van een bestand met redirects.
Ik constateerde iets soortgelijks bij op één na alle musea: als ik naar een expositie linkte – ik maak graag reclame voor tentoonstellingen – is die link dood wanneer de expositie is afgelopen. Het is alsof de musea niet begrijpen dat hun informatie na een tentoonstelling even belangrijk is als daarvoor. Het museum dat, voor zover ik kan overzien, als enige zijn informatie beschikbaar houdt, is het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.
De Livius Nieuwsbrief
De meeste dode links zaten vanzelfsprekend in de blogjes die ik tot 2020 wijdde aan de Livius Nieuwsbrief: een maandelijks overzicht van het digitale nieuws. Voor een deel zijn de links verouderd doordat websites zijn herzien of media niet langer bestaan. Een Libanese krant is bijvoorbeeld niet meer beschikbaar en ook niet opgeslagen in de website Archive.org. Die informatie is voorgoed zoek en dat documenteert niet de Libanese crisis, maar de kaalslag in de journalistiek.
Voor een ander deel zijn de links verouderd doordat sites als Eurakelert oudheidkundig fopnieuws zijn gaan verwijderen. Links naar solide onderzoeksresultaten zijn er nog, maar de archeoblabla waar men vroeger naar heeft gelinkt, zijn verwijderd. Heel goed.
Het bekijken van de informatie van vóór 2020 had voor mij soms iets nostalgisch. Je ziet het bewijs groeien dat de grote zesde-eeuwse epidemie de builenpest was. Je ziet hoe er ooit sprake van was het Thermenmuseum in Heerlen te sluiten en schelpzand over de ruïne te leggen, en hoe het museum zich wist te herpakken. Het museum noemt zich overigens voortaan Romeins Museum.
Nostalgie terzijde: de confrontatie met het oude nieuws is schokkend. Ik las een aankondiging uit 2016 dat het Römisch-Germanisches Museum na zes jaar sluiting weer open zou zijn. Het is nog steeds niet heropend en ik hoorde onlangs dat de aanbesteding voor een deelproject nog moet beginnen. In de oude nieuwsbrieven zag ik de talloze overdrijvingen en de evidente onzin weer terug. Wat nieuws had behoren te zijn, kwam daarentegen zelden in de media, zoals de opmars van artificiële intelligentie. Het echte nieuws werd zelfs weggehouden: een stuk dat ik over deep learning schreef aan de hand van de Dode Zee-rollen, werd althans door een krantenredactie gedumbsized tot een stuk over judaica.
Zelftrivialisering
Toen ik al die oude nieuwsbrieven nalas, ervoer ik opnieuw de groeiende wanhoop waarmee ik eraan werkte: de maandelijkse poging om nog iets positiefs op te dreggen uit de eindeloze modderstroom van halve waarheden, politiek, overdrijvingen en pseudohistorische parallellen. Ik probeerde van alles: ik verplichtte mezelf te beginnen met “het mooiste van de maand” en ik plaatste alle oudheidkundige zelftrivialisering bij elkaar in één rubriek, in de hoop dat de andere rubrieken wel leuk zouden zijn. Dat werkte niet. En uiteindelijk was er het deprimerende zelfinzicht dat ik, door aandacht aan desinformatie te geven, medeplichtig was.
De zelftrivialisering is er nog steeds. Archeologen die al naar de pers stappen vóór er een publicatie is. Journalisten die niet in de gaten hebben dat de framing van academische persberichten niet klopt. Classici die liever I.D.O.H.Z.O-ën dan praten over hun eigenlijke werk. Het gebrek aan werkelijke samenwerking. Een algemene weigering publieksvragen centraal te stellen. Voorlichters die informatie naar de Binnenlandredactie sturen om de Wetenschapsredactie te omzeilen.
Sinds kort is er een nieuwe vorm van zelftrivialisering: oudheidkundigen die zeggen blij te zijn met The Odyssey, omdat daardoor de belangstelling voor het vak toeneemt. Dat is waar. Gelukkig maar. Maar het is ook als een Melanesische cargocult waarin de redding van buitenaf komt. Terwijl je als classicus, archeoloog of archeoloog ook gewoon je kont tegen de krib kunt gooien: beantwoord de vraag wat je methoden zijn, vertel wat je nu feitelijk doet en toon hoe belangrijk je werk is. Je hoeft niet door anderen gered te worden. Iets meer zelfvertrouwen mag best. Het vak is mooi genoeg.

Is there a chance that somebody at #Wikimania knows something about the recent loss of years of ahort links to #Wikidata queries on https://query-chest.toolforge.org/? The seeming flushing of all caches at some point earlier this month makes the service utterly useless and caused thousands of links in publications, on websites etc. to rot.

AND it appears that Query Chest deletes queries after two years, thus breaking all published links … given that there is practically no documentation of this tool, I should have used more caution in adopting it.
Does anybody know of a way to share links to exceptionable #SPARQL queries on #Wikidata, which also works for complex queries or those not limited to #ASCII?
Edit: after checking more of my existing short URLs to SPARQL queries, it appears as if Query Chest has flushed its entire cache of queries in recent days. One can still submit new queries and the site works as expected, but all existing links are gone.

A Pew Research Center analysis shows that “a quarter of all webpages that existed at one point between 2013 and 2023 are no longer accessible, as of October 2023”. Furthermore, the research looked at Wikipedia and found that “54% of pages contain at least one link in their 'References' section that points to a page that no longer exists.”

It's frustrating that new websites last no more than two years, aka when their funky (expensive?) domain name expires. I link to projects, and in two years, they're already disappearing. I see this happening more and more with the websites I link to. #linkrot

Just went after hundreds of URLs that didn’t work anymore (updating them to point to archive.org).
While this is routine work for every site owner, it’s astonishing to see how many peers and orgs throw away links—some of them with excellent profiles, others the result of hard work of DevRel teams.
Extra pain to see this when they didn’t own the domain (GitHub, Medium, some such).
Make a point to always set up redirects. It protects your work—and saves others some time.

They plan to release like a BitTorrent or something to make it easy to share and prevent "Link Rot"...

Link rot continues to be a real scourge on the 'net; in fact, it's worse now than it was when people starting warning about it 30 years ago.
That's why I'm proud that many pages on my main site have not changed in 20 years.
More seriously, donate to the Internet Archive, so they can preserve more of the 'net for posterity.
