  6. Just to keep this here, in prep for :

    > There are some patriotic citizens who sincerely hope that America will win the war - but they also hope that Russia will lose it; and there are some who hope that America will win the war, but that England will lose it; and there are some who hope that America will win the war, but that Roosevelt will lose it.

  7. Just went after hundreds of URLs that didn’t work anymore (updating them to point to archive.org).

While this is routine work for every site owner, it’s astonishing to see how many peers and orgs throw away links—some of them with excellent profiles, others the result of hard work of DevRel teams.

Extra pain to see this when they didn’t own the domain (GitHub, Medium, some such).

Make a point to always set up redirects. It protects your work—and saves others some time.

They plan to release like a BitTorrent or something to make it easy to share and prevent "Link Rot"...

  13. Link rot continues to be a real scourge on the 'net; in fact, it's worse now than it was when people starting warning about it 30 years ago.

That's why I'm proud that many pages on my main site have not changed in 20 years.

More seriously, donate to the Internet Archive, so they can preserve more of the 'net for posterity.

  18. A Pew Research Center study found that 38% of webpages from a decade ago, and about 25% of pages sampled across the decade, are now inaccessible; our analysis shows that the Wayback Machine has rescued roughly 15% of those otherwise dead pages.

  26. Machines can only remember what remains.

The popular story about the internet is that it remembers everything.
My experience has been the opposite.

Websites disappear. Forums vanish. Domains expire. Entire conversations fade away.

    What remains becomes the record.

  32. We've teamed up with Automattic to fight link rot on the open web. Check out the new Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer for WordPress. The free plugin preserves pages, redirects broken links to archived versions, and helps ensure the web keeps its memory.

“It’s very important that websites have a memory," said Alexander Rose of Automattic. "When links go dead, in effect, the truth goes dead—especially in the age of AI,”

A little bit less annoying pet peeve: URLs that work with or without the “www.” part but do not redirect to a canonical hostname.

  34. A lightly-scheduled week wrapped up with my wife and I seeing two D.C. teams that didn’t exist 20 years ago play against two Seattle teams: the Spirit’s 3-2 win against the Reign Friday night, then the Nats’ 9-5 loss to the Mariners Sunday afternoon. In between, a bike ride to and then through Rock Creek Park offered me a peek at actual construction progress of Maryland’s snakebit Purple Line light-rail project.

5/20/2024: The Internet Is Not Forever: 38% of Web Pages From 2013 No Longer Exist, PCMag

I missed this Pew Research Center study when it landed Friday of the previous week, but the problem of link rot is an evergreen topic, and my own career has provided numerous examples of it.

5/22/2024: Microsoft and Google’s new AI sales pitches: We’re your last line of defense against your scatterbrained self, Fast Company

This was originally going to be a recap of how Google used its I/O developer conference two weeks ago to position AI as your last line of defense against hostile humans. But then Microsoft unveiled an implementation of AI that could vastly expand the privacy attack surface of Windows users, so I had to rewrite a large chunk of this post.

5/22/2024: Which Tech Company Has the Worst Reputation?, PCMag

Seeing the former Twitter ranked at 99 out of 100 brands, above only the Trump Organization, caught my interest. But as I noted in my writeup, some of the results of this Harris and Axios project invite some skepticism about the methodology.

5/22/2024: T-Mobile Raises Rates on Many Older Plans by $5 or $2 a Month, PCMag

Halfway through writing this post, T-Mobile made me part of the story by sending a text message informing me that I’d be paying an extra $5 a month on the Business Unlimited Advanced plan that T-Mobile introduced barely three years ago.

5/23/2024: Bluesky Adds Direct Messaging, But It’s No Signal Replacement Yet, PCMag

If T-Mobile hadn’t grabbed so much of my attention Thursday, I could have written this post then. Instead, I had a little more time to try out Bluesky’s new DM feature–and to cobble together my own photo to illustrate this piece after seeing Getty Images offer nothing current.

  35. "The act of #takingnotes in public [#blogging] is a powerful #discipline: rather than jotting cryptic notes to myself in a commonplace book, I publish those notes for strangers. This imposes a #rigor on the #notetaking that makes those notes far more useful to me in #yearstocome."

  36. Did you know that nearly 40% of web pages that existed in 2013 are already gone? Link rot is real, and the "cloud" is just someone else's computer that might be turned off tomorrow.

This is why self-hosting and local backups aren't just a hobby anymore - they're digital archeology. If you love a piece of information, save it. Don't assume the internet will remember it for you. That's why I'm building my NAS right now.

  37. I have an idea for mitigating #linkrot:
A script that takes a #html file (probably blogpost), finds external links, and for each link it creates a popup that appears on mouse hover.
This popup includes the link, it's title, publish date, tl;dr (written by you), and buttons to open the link in archive.is or Wayback Machine. Optionally a paywall warning.
The tl;dr would be useful not only for cases where the original link is dead, but also to signify why are you linking to that page in particular - something that is often done by having a whole sentence as the link text.
This script should only be ran once, and would not require any client-side code.

Is this a good idea? Does something like this already exist? Feedback appreciated :) :boost_requested:

The slides of his talk on SPARQL 1.1 from 2011 are still perfectly accessible online (dajobe.org/talks/201105-sparql). Many of the external resources, however, have been moved (but can still be found just by googling) #linkrot
