  1. The Living Signatories to The Declaration of Independence and the American Jubilee

America celebrated its 50th anniversary on July 4, 1826. Just three signatories to The Declaration of Independence, Adams, Jefferson, and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, lived to see the day. I look at their stories as related to July 4, 1826

  2. Today, America celebrates its 250th birthday. 200 years ago, America celebrated its Jubilee. On the occasion of America's 50th, three signatories to The Declaration of Independence still lived. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson famously both died on July 4, leaving Charles Carroll as the last living signatory. Carroll would live on until 1832. In my new article, I collected some quotes and stories about Adams, Jefferson, and Carroll related to the American Jubilee.

  3. A quotation from John Adams

Your “ἄρiςτοi” [aristocrats] are the most difficult Animals to manage, of any thing in the whole Theory and practice of Government. They will not Suffer themselves to be governed. They not only exert all their own Subtilty Industry and courage, but they employ the Commonalty, to knock to pieces every Plan and Model that the most honest Architects in Legislation can invent to keep them within bounds.

John Adams (1735–1826) American lawyer, Founding Father, statesman, US President (1797–1801)
    Letter (1813-07-09) to Thomas Jefferson

  8. A quotation from John Adams

Our Passions, Ambition, Avarice, Love, Resentment &c possess so much metaphysical Subtilty and so much overpowering Eloquence, that they insinuate themselves into the Understanding and the Conscience and convert both to their Party. And I may be deceived as much as any of them, when I Say, that Power must never be trusted without a Check.

  10. A quotation from John Adams

Power always Sincerely, conscientiously, de très bon Foi, believes itself Right. Power always thinks it has a great Soul and vast Views, beyond the Comprehension of the Weak; and that it is doing God Service when it is violating all his Laws.

  14. A quotation from John Adams

However, it is the Part of a great Politician to make the Character of his People; to extinguish among them the Follies and Vices that he sees, and to create in them the Virtues and Abilities which he sees wanting. I wish I was sure that America has one such Politician, but I fear she has not.

  16. A quotation from John Adams

We ought to consider, what is the end of government, before we determine which is the best form. Upon this point all speculative politicians will agree, that the happiness of society is the end of government, as all Divines and moral Philosophers will agree that the happiness of the individual is the end of man. From this principle it will follow, that the form of government, which communicates ease, comfort, security, or in one word happiness to the greatest number of persons, and in the greatest degree, is the best.

John Adams (1735-1826) American lawyer, Founding Father, statesman, US President (1797-1801)

  17. A quotation from John Adams

But this is an unalterable Truth, that the People can never be enslaved but by their own Tameness, Pusillanimity, Sloth or Corruption. They may be deceived, and their Symplicity, Ignorance, and Docility render them frequently liable to deception. And of this, the aspiring, designing, ambitious few are very sensible. He is the Statesman qualifyed by Nature to scatter Ruin and Destruction in his Path who by deceiving a Nation can render Despotism desirable in their Eyes and make himself popular in Undoing.
