President Donald Trump celebrated America’s 250th anniversary in a rousing speech on the Fourth of July at the National Mall on Saturday night.

Trump delivered his remarks after 11 p.m. ET, after being delayed by over an hour due to lightning and heavy rains. But Trump said he would not be deterred in celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

“If we have to speak in front of one person at four in the morning I’m going to be here,” Trump said in a speech streamed live on Newsmax. “There’s no way we can be deterred.”

“Tonight we come together for one of the most joyous and glorious milestones of all time,” Trump added. “For two and a half centuries, our American Republic has stood as the crowning achievement of human history.

“This country is the home of freedom. This is the land of liberty. And this is a flag that’s the banner of the most extraordinary, most exceptional, most incredible nation ever to exist on the face of the Earth.”

The president said the American people have shown more courage, done more good, righted more injustice and achieved more greatness than anyone else.

“For 250 years, the United States of America has been the hope, the promise, the light and the glory among all of the nations of the world, all over the world, they try and be like us,” Trump said.

“Nobody can be like us, and with God’s help, we will always be this,” Trump added. “Or even better. We’re going to be better.”

Trump used his speech to honor numerous veterans who fought in American wars, bringing them on stage to salute the flag while telling their tales of heroism.

Among those honored were 104-year-old Ken Schrubing, who was just 19 years old when he survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and 101-year-old Don Graves, who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

“These are the fighters and the banners of the Greatest Generation,” Trump said. “They are the greatest generation. They saved the world and they made America very, very proud. We’re very proud of you, heroes all.“

Marine Corporal Pat Finn and Private First Class Rudy Meekins, who fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War, were also honored, along with astronaut Jack Schmitt, the last American to walk on the moon, and the Artemis II flight crew.

Eleven Gold Star families were also presented with flags during Trump’s speech.

Speaking in front of the first American flags produced, Trump praised the Founding Fathers and the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

“Those 56 patriots put everything at risk, stepped onto the stage of destiny, and seized a victory for the ages,” Trump said.

Trump said the Founding Fathers have allowed America to thrive for 250 years.

“Our cause was just. Our people are brave, our culture is exceptional, and our destiny is written by God,” Trump said.

“And as we can see here tonight, after 250 years, the spirit of 1776 still lives within us all,” Trump added.

A subdued semiquincentennial

It’s the 250th birthday of the United States, but the mood around the nation can seem distinctly sub-celebratory. It’s definitely less than joyful around the nation’s capital, where months of seeing armed troops from other states on our streets and watching buildings transformed into billboards for the 47th president have now been followed by a Trumpified version of the national holiday.

That’s not how things were supposed to go, but the White House shoved aside a Congressionally chartered, nonpartisan project to celebrate the semiquincentennial and spun up its own Freedom 250 organization instead. That group, having already treated the nation last month to the crass spectacle of a UFC fight on the South Lawn, has now taken over much of the Mall with the “Great American State Fair,” a cheap, tacky production that reeks of squandered possibilities.

The organizers seem to be trying to overcompensate for that sad spectacle by scheduling nine hours of military flyovers from Saturday afternoon into the night, to be followed by 850,000 fireworks launched from 10 sites–which would mean an average of 35 a second at each site, leaving an unhealthy haze of particulate pollution draped over the city.

Before that orgy of pyrotechnics, however, Trump will have to get his turn at the microphone, and that speech is no more likely to end on time than any he has given in the last decade.

Trump’s insistence on making himself the face of the American franchise, even on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s adoption, would be repellent enough if he were good at his job. He is not, unless you define that job as “running an administration unparalleled in bigotry, corruption, cruelty, ignorance, and incompetence.”

But while Trump may think along the lines of “L’État, c’est moi” (not that he would ever be seen speaking in French), America is not and has never been defined only by its presidents.

And Trump’s reactionary, resentful vision of America is not the country I see on its 250th birthday.

The nation I know does not subscribe to the blood-and-soil nationalism sold by the Trump administration’s racist propagandists. We renew a different story every time a group of immigrants stands up, forming a quilt of ancestries and accents, at a naturalization ceremony to choose the United States.

The country that I love is one that can acknowledge its problems and work on them, one where people left out of some of the Founders’ visions for America have ably used the Founders’ own words to push the nation forward. On this day, there is no better example of that than Frederick Douglass in “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” calling the Constitution properly interpreted a “Glorious Liberty Document.”

It remains so, even if some members of an increasingly embarrassing Supreme Court keep trying to twist it into something else.

The America that I see has a long and honorable history of not treating other countries as freeloaders or potential targets of annexation and instead being willing to cooperate with them. Even if we outright need their help, starting with France’s critical support for the American Revolution.

And the U.S. that I know applies its vast economic and technological resources not only to deploy the military might that has been booming over Washington but to advance science and apply it to send humans and machines farther into the universe than any other nation–as we saw this spring with Artemis II, although that itself involved international teamwork.

Staying optimistic in the American experiment can be difficult in 2026, knowing that Trump’s chaos was a choice that Americans made and that his stooges are working to wreck so many of the things that actually make America great.

But our country’s story includes Americans making a way out of no way. We are a stubborn lot, even when our institutions start to fail us. That stubbornness has filled streets as citizens have marched peacefully to protest this administration’s offenses, and it’s now sending voters to the polls in equally impressive numbers for representatives who will oppose them. The message these signs and votes deliver was true in 1776 and holds up in 2026, no matter what the current president says: There are no kings in America.

A BetTER Day

Independence has its day,

Large-scale flyovers without proper notice are rude–and an insult to avgeeks

The past two days have featured some of the most impressive airshow performances in D.C. skies in years–but I, a card-carrying avgeek, saw almost none of them. I’m blaming that on the Trump administration, and I don’t think I’m wrong.

Wednesday night, I missed all but the end of a flyover that concluded with a B-2 bomber accompanied by a formation of F-35 fighters–I heard the roar of the smaller jets as I was exiting a grocery store but only saw one or two reflected in the windows of an office building across the street. Thursday afternoon, I didn’t catch any of an unusual grouping of two B-52s and pairs of F-15s, F/A-18s and F-35s.

I was in the wrong place twice (which is why I’m illustrating this post with a picture of an F-16 formation over Nationals Park before 2025’s home opener) because the organizers of the Freedom 250 series of events on the Malls did not specify flight times in their announcement of these flyovers.

The people running this decidedly partisan event also didn’t use their X account to offer updates on flyover scheduling. I should have instead checked photographer and aviation enthusiast Andrew Leyden, who has been relaying updates there.

(He’s also on Bluesky but not repeating everything that he posts on X, to my dismay.)

From looking at Reddit, I see that I have company in being perplexed by the lack of a heads-up and wondering why there’s no published schedule. It appears that I’ll continue to be left guessing over the remaining days of flyovers–through July 10.

That’s not how this is supposed to work: People on the ground deserve to know when they’ll see their taxpayer dollars in action like this. They don’t have to be total aerospace nerds to appreciate a demonstration of engineering in action–and the piloting skills required to fly so precisely.

And even if folks on the ground somehow have zero interest in aviation, they still might want to know when not to schedule a call to avoid people on the other end thinking they’re about to be on the receiving end of an airstrike.

We know how to do this correctly. I can plan to watch for Arlington National Cemetery flyovers in support of military funerals because I get a text and an e-mail a few days before from the District’s AlertDC system; although those alerts had grown spotty by the time I wrote an explainer about flyovers for Greater Greater Washington in 2023, they’ve been much more reliable recently.

For more involved aerial performances, organizers have even fewer reasons to leave people guessing. The May 8, 2025 “Arsenal of Democracy” flyover that commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe had a starting time of 12:10 p.m. published weeks in advance. And six years ago, even in the middle of pandemic-induced chaos, we knew when to step outside to watch the July 4, 2020 flyovers above the Mall that Trump ordered up because those, too, came with a start time published three days before.

This is far from the worst example of the second Trump administration falling below the low standards of the first one, but it belongs somewhere on that list.
