@deeptabhattacha oh, this is very sad indeed. I had the opportunity to interact with him a bit when working in T1D and always thought he was a very interesting humble person. An excellent #scientist and #Immunologist .

@freemo someone who knows more about this than me #gastroenterologist, #immunologist, #microbiologist could tell you whether a 'sterile' human could survive or even exist. How was the bubble boy fed? Did he receive intravenous nutrition?

Healthy humans carry 1.5 kg of a diverse selection of bacteria in their intestines (the microbiota), which have an important role in maintaining health. A healthy diet maintains a healthy gut microbiome, and we are only just beginning to understand the importance of these bacteria.

It is not only the gut that carries a commensal bacterial load, any body cavity linked to the external environment will carry a non-pathogenic community of bacteria, including the uterus. This means, we are likely to be exposed to placental bacteria in the womb. Once exposed in the womb I don't know how a human would be subsequently 'sterilised' of bacteria.

I stand to be corrected by those with the knowledge!

I love constructive discussions about science and how to make #academia a better place for everyone. I love #cooking, #gardening, #singing, #canoeing and learning from my 2 sons. Time for a #introduction post for #ScienceMastodon ! I am an ecological and evolutionary #immunologist interested in understanding how symbiotic relationships shape immunity and vice versa. Most of the time I work with cnidarian systems (#corals ), but I also dabble some in fish.

I am a #newPI at Texas State University, which is a #HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution). I am passionate about creating equitable and inclusive research opportunities for our diverse academic community!

I am an #Immunologist, #Cell Biologist and/or #Developmental Biologist, working with #Mathematicians and #Physicists to understand how T cells develop, respond to infections and cancer, or become cancers themselves.
I also work to improve #equity in medical research.
I run a lab in #Melbourne #Naarm, #Australia that works across the #PeterMac (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre) and #Swinburne University.
