THIS album may have been the one that cracked him. I certainly have heard him revisiting it after our first spin of it together.

Hoy escuchando... Cumbia & Jazz Fusion, un álbum muy tardío de Mingus (es el que estaba escuchando antes del apagón de hecho). Parte se escribió para la peli italiana Todo Modo, aparentemente.
Soy muy fan de Mingus pero tengo que reconocer que es un álbum bastante nicho. Tiene muy poco de cumbia, realmente, al menos lo que llevo. Ah um.

After watching the #PBS #AmericanMasters program on the life of the virtuoso pianist #HazelScott, I was reminded that I have her album "Relaxed Piano Moods" in my LP collection.
What's really interesting about this album apart from it's delightful sound is that while Scott is the lead player, her "backup" players for #MaxRoach & #CharlesMingus who (at the time (1955) were just emerging as two of the greatest #ModernJazz (#PostBop) musicians of the era who have since become legends of jazz.
Roach had only started playing with #Brownie (#CliffordBrown) in 1954 (who tragically died in a car accident just 2 years later) and it was only a year later in 1956 that #Mingus released his epic album "Pithecanthropus Erectus."
It is also notable the #DebutRecords which was the label that released this recording was founded by Roach & Mingus in 1952 (& went out of business in 1957) and that they thought so highly of Scott that they presumably volunteered to serve as her sidemen on the album!

Joni Mitchell's Mingus. I sold all my other Joni vinyl a few years back. Including the one with the blackface cover which led to this collaboration.

This is the #MoFi OneStep - the music is monumental and cacophonous and this pressing captures it about as well as any.

This morning's #workout #music comes from #drummer Hamid Drake accompanied by the great William Parker. #Jazz #FreeJazz #Duet
Two videos - reminds me much of "Percussion Discussion" by Max Roach and #Mingus - Hamid Drake is one of the all-time greatest jazz drummers. As a drummer, something that fascinates me in these videos is his ever-changing grip(s) on his sticks. So much of the time he has what I could only call a "hammer grip" with his thumb wrapped around the stick - but his grip shifts constantly. How he doesn't lose his sticks, I don't know. Genius.
