  1. Good morning from Minneapolis where, quite early Sunday, it's 71℉/22℃; smoke; light south-southeast winds; visibility 6 miles at the airport.

    Today
Patchy smoke between 8am and 11am. Sunny, with a high near 91.

    - Turning cooler with near or slightly below normal temperatures Tuesday with the hot temperatures returning by next weekend.
    — Area Forecast Discussion, NWS Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN

With a large majority of prospective tourists and outers, "camping out" is a leading factor in the summer vacation. And during the long winter months they are prone to collect in little knots and talk much of camps, fishing, hunting, and "roughing it." The last phrase is very popular and always cropping out in the talks on matters pertaining to a vacation in the woods. I dislike the phrase. We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks—anywhere that we may be placed—with the necessity always present of being on time and up to our work; of providing for the dependent ones; of keeping up, catching up, or getting left. "Alas for the life-long battle, whose bravest slogan is bread."

  4. Absolutely love this photo by John. Could there be a better way to spend a Summer's evening than out on the water.

  9. La Mauricie: A Watery Wilderness

Located in the Laurentians, La Mauricie National Park is a classic piece of the Canadian Shield. It contains over 150 lakes and countless ponds, interconnected by streams, making it a paddler's paradise. The park protects a landscape shaped by millennia of glacial activity and is a vital habitat for the endangered Wood Turtle. #Canada #LaMauricie #Quebec #Canoeing 🇨🇦

  24. Enjoyed a very short, safe canoe ride along the edge of our lake today near #AlgonquinPark. Raining heavy and water was still very cold, so we took no chances, keeping to the edge where the water was just a few inches deep. 26. I'm below 10 pounds of gear for my backpacking bikepacking, and canoe camping base weight (paddling gear and biking gear not included). For bikepacking, I don't use the pack listed, and I haven't weighed the bikepacking bags that I use. I'm using Ortleib gravel panniers, a Rogue Panda top tube bag, and a Revelate Designs Pronghorn and Egress handlebar bag. So, probably 4 pounds in bags. I should get lighter panniers.

How was the packraft for navigation? I can no longer manage hauling my own canoe or kayak on a car, and I'm curious about how a packraft compares for handling.

  30. Good Morning #Canada
We still have 20+ rivers to highlight in this #CanadaRivers series and a couple of things stand out. We are now listing rivers that are close to 1,000 kms, and despite the size there are many I've never heard of. Add in several million lakes and you gotta agree that Canada is blessed with #Hydrology features.
The Thelon River, called Akilinik in Inuit, is #21 on our list and stretches 904 kms across northern Canada. Its source is Whitefish Lake in the Northwest Territories, and it flows east to Baker Lake in Nunavut, ultimately draining into Hudson Bay. It is fed by a watershed of 142,400 km2 but with a vertical drop of less than 400 metres over its length it is not suitable for hydroelectric development. The Thelon is one of the easiest tundra rivers to paddle, with a steady current, few rapids and no portages. It therefore is a destination for paddling vacations and tourists looking to experience Canada's north.

  35. Our Belgium friends invited us to paddle small, sporty rivers in Belgium and Germany. Last weekend, the time had come and on friday, we paddled 18km at the Ourthe between Houffalize and Nisramont. The Ourthe is not a very challenging body of watervery was a funny tour to warm up and to have a chat with new people. 1/3

  36. TIL about Oskar Speck, who kayaked from Ulm, #Germany, in May 1932, down the Danube, through to Cyprus to work in the copper mines—but decided to continue through to #Australia instead. After over seven years of paddling, he finally arrived on Thursday Island, in Torres Strait, in September 1939, whereupon Australian authorities arrested him as a #POW.
