#hashtagabuse — Public Fediverse posts

Since a few days, our moderation team is litterally spammed with many generic trending hashtags to review.

These are created by several accounts hosted on mastodon.hongkongers.net which create posts with many generic hashtags which are published several times, resulting in those hashtags all appearing in trends.

This is considered abusive, weighing on the efforts of our moderation team to review, and diluting the trending hashtags in too big a list, which becomes irrelevant.

Therefore, our instance shall silence mastodon.hongkongers.net to avoid this hashtag abuse. Our users will still be able to interact by following their accounts.

The city of Smyrna continues to send me back and forth to different people and assume I understand what departments exist and exactly what they're all in charge of. Their rental rates are more than most private event spaces anyways if they don't want to be involved (and it sounds like they probably don't). I also got the most insane rate for a venue yet at $2000 for the 3 hours or so we'd need it! I'm going to assume that space mostly only does rich peoples weddings or something. It's looking like a Cobb contra dance isn't actually going to happen (but we'll keep trying).

Recommendations still welcome if anyone is in the Smyrna/Marietta/South Cobb area.

There are people that abuse hashtags in all corners of the Fediverse it seems. Ironically I just blocked someone that was using a news feed to post stories with dozens of hashtags and no source links as a means to drive people to their company's website.

As much as I'd hate to limit people I kind of want to see a limit on hashtags per post to curb this behavior because the few hashtags I follow introduce too much spam.

@immibis @KirstieJane This, and, if you find an interesting thread, check out the profiles of people in the thread - I’ve found a few interesting people that wouldn’t have been on my radar unless I’d spent a few minutes poking around and scrolling through their feeds.

Also, don’t hesitate to report #HashtagAbuse - where there are a dozen or more unrelated tags in a toot, just because the author wants attention. Gotta keep those hashtags clean & tidy!

I think the snag might be is that others aren't using #hashtags as much as they should... I see tons of content without even a single hashtag.

Also, when you see #HashtagAbuse, report the accounts. I was getting ads from a 'news' account that was spamming random unrelated hashtags.
