Hey Retro Fans!

When we think of retro computing, most of us picture a beige tower PC, a C64, or an Amiga. But yesterday, our bouncer welcomed a true heavyweight from the depths of professional IT history:

VMS_Mosaic 4.0 on OpenVMS V7.3 (VAXstation 4000-VLC)!

Let that user agent sink in for a moment. DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) was once a giant of the computer industry. Their VAX architecture and the accompanying OpenVMS operating system are absolute legends, famous for a level of stability that modern systems can often only dream of.

The VAXstation 4000-VLC ("Very Low Cost") hit the market in the very early 90s—a compact UNIX/VMS machine for professional use. The fact that someone in 2026 fires up this machine, launches the graphical Motif interface, and browses FrogFind using the native VMS_Mosaic browser is absolutely mind-blowing. It proves once again: With the right bridge (and FrogFind!), no architecture is too old for the internet.

Since I am on an accidental #nostalgia (naustalgia?) trip in trying to find old #MUD things, this one popped up on my Facebook feed which may amuse the #RetroComputing #VAX #VMS and #History of the #Internet folks.

This was UKNet's office in about 1994-1995

I think there are some #SUN and #SGI machines in there too, there definitely were somewhere.

In the late 1970s Interlisp was ported to DEC VAX computers under Berkeley Unix. These papers reported on the project and its challenges.

Oh, and Andrew McCann was my tutor when I was at Leeds Computational Science, so I assume you knew him fairly well if you were working on SPITBOL.

He was genuinely the only person in that department I got along with, and he was pretty honest with me and told me I should just pack up and leave because it wasn't the right environment for me, personality-wise.

Eventually, he left instead, and I stayed on and slogged through the final year to get a 3rd (the most I could get at that point because I was planning on leaving in my 2nd year and had done nothing, passing my exams was kind of a shock and made me have to rethink). I then got a postgrad placement at Leicester in a place that was the right environment for me, personality-wise.

Amusingly, though, when I left Leicester I went back to Leeds to run systems for another department, and they had to deal with me as a peer. The only person who coped well with that change was Ted Appleby over in Mech Eng. We stayed friends for years, and he gave me a load of SUN, VAX, and SGI stuff for my museum into the early 2000s. These pics were from a 2005 pickup, so he was still there then.

I am going way off topic, but it's an excuse to post pics of old junk :D

Addendum to the Friday COVID vax. It went pretty well. Four days post-jab now and I had no after-effects beyond the sore arm.

That made it hard to sleep on my left side for the first two nights. I have the slightest bruise-feeling there still with pressure, but I'll take it! Not much different than the last few vaxes before this one.

Still another few days to build maximum immune benefit I'd assume.

Given the opportunity, I would, with alacrity, revert to using #Emacs via a #VT100 on a #VAX-11/780 running #4.3BSD. I dare say there is much good that could be done with that setup—especially in today's #AI age.

It is not that I detest modernity, but that I adore #simplicity.
