Catch of the Day: A Dinosaur on the Web – OpenVMS on a VAXstation! 🦖
Hey Retro Fans!
When we think of retro computing, most of us picture a beige tower PC, a C64, or an Amiga. But yesterday, our bouncer welcomed a true heavyweight from the depths of professional IT history:
VMS_Mosaic 4.0 on OpenVMS V7.3 (VAXstation 4000-VLC)!
Let that user agent sink in for a moment. DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) was once a giant of the computer industry. Their VAX architecture and the accompanying OpenVMS operating system are absolute legends, famous for a level of stability that modern systems can often only dream of.
The VAXstation 4000-VLC ("Very Low Cost") hit the market in the very early 90s—a compact UNIX/VMS machine for professional use. The fact that someone in 2026 fires up this machine, launches the graphical Motif interface, and browses FrogFind using the native VMS_Mosaic browser is absolutely mind-blowing. It proves once again: With the right bridge (and FrogFind!), no architecture is too old for the internet.

Another piece from the #DEC lot restored today: a BA353 #StorageWorks desktop expansion unit. Left and middle slot only had blanks, now they have proper trays. The left one has a RZ26 installed, the middle one is still empty. Also had to re-cap the RRD42 CD-ROM drive due to heavy leakage.
This should help me getting any #VAXstation up and running quite fast, as I can install a ready-to-go version of VMS on the hard disk in the left bay and/or boot from install media if the VAXstation itself has no CD-ROM drive. 🙂

Das nächste Gerät aus der #DEC-Sammlung steht zum Verkauf: Eine vollständig restaurierte digital VAXstation 4000 VLC
Wurde komplett zerlegt und gereinigt, RIFA aus dem Netzteil entfernt, Lüfter neu geölt (müssen sich noch einlaufen, sind noch laut), Tantal auf der 12V-Schiene erneuert.
Wurde auf Funktion getestet, siehe https://oldbytes.space/@derSammler/114658015944737781
Gehäuse hat Gilb und altersbedingt und durch Lagerung ein paar Macken.
Die VLC hat die maximal möglichen 24 MB RAM und eine 120 MB Festplatte sowie die 1 MB Farbgrafik-Karte. Kein OS installiert, darum muss sich der Käufer kümmern. 😉
Preis: 200€

Cheapest way to build a 3W3-to-VGA adapter: just use the power connector from an old Nokia phone charger. 🥳
And if color is not important for you, you only need to connect the green channel.

Finaler Test muss noch warten, bis ich ein 3W3-nach-VGA-Kabel habe, aber bis dahin muss ich eh noch zwei weitere von den Dingern fertig machen...

Gerade bei einer #VAXstation 4000 VLC den RIFA aus dem Netzteil entfernt, damit der nicht hochgeht. Und was passiert beim ersten Einschalt-Test? Natürlich geht stattdessen ein Tantal auf dem Mainboard hoch. 😆
Zum Glück SMD, da muss ich das Board nicht extra nochmal ausbauen.

Endlich auch die zweite LK411-Tastatur von #digital fertig. Zwischen der und der anderen liegen 5 Jahre - innen eine komplett andere Konstruktion. Und die war echt dreckig... 😲
Jetzt noch die zwei anderen für die #VAXstation und dann hab ich erstmal genug Tastaturen für dieses Jahr gereinigt. 😅

Das erste #DEC / #digital VT525 Terminal ist instand gesetzt. 🙂 Morgen wird das zweite fertig und dann geht's an die drei #VAXstation 4000 VLC. Tastaturen dafür kommen am Freitag - muss mir nur noch ein Video-Kabel besorgen oder basteln...

Die #VAXstation 3100 ist auch nicht schlecht. Mal eben drei SCSI-Festplatten und ein #Philips CM201 #LMSI CD-Laufwerk. Super selten die Dinger.

Mir wurde eine größere Sammlung an Hardware von #digital angeboten, hauptsächlich #VAXstation 4000/VLC und 4000/60. Nehme aber nur, was ich selbst brauche und nicht alles. Könnte allerdings ein paar mehr nehmen, wenn jemand Interesse an einer solchen hätte. Sollte dann allerdings mehr oder weniger verbindlich sein, da ich die nicht umsonst bekomme und am Ende nicht drauf sitzen bleiben will. Bei Interesse gerne melden. 🙂

I tried adding an image description, but that seems not possible to accomplish via an edit(?).
So please excuse, I was in a hurry yesterday.
The picture shows a cathode ray tube with amber text on it. It is a VT220 terminal from the manufacturer digital. It shows some horrible C code, an invocation of the c compiler and the compiled program as well as its output: Some glyph roughly resembling a heart with the text “Hello world” next to it.
The terminal resides on a #VAXstation running #BSD
