  1. Have you wondered how calico cats get that patchwork pattern? How about why they are always the same three colors? Why are there so few male calicos? It all comes down to genetics. #biology #scienceshorts #calicocats #catscience #genetics

  6. Cat science fact of the day: The only reason cats don't respond to their name is the limited human vocal range. If humans were able to name their cats <sound of a food packet opening> we would be able to summon them with ease

  7. Turns out orange cats are special.
Science confirms they’re genetic one-offs — the only animals with this wild mutation.
Maybe that explains the chaotic energy and unmatched charm.
Long live the ginger menace 🧡😹

  13. Here I report on a study about training dogs. Do any of the methods outlined work for cats?

Kinda. But certainly not the way they "work" for dogs.

That is because cat training... isn't. The popular conception of "training" is that we tell the being what to do and they do it.

Because if they don't do it, we will make things unpleasant for them.

This doesn't work for cats. I don't like it either.

  14. Are cats domesticated? turns out to be a complicated question.

The time period at which cats and humans first share civilization keeps reaching further back into the past. The cat genome has been completely sequenced. And yet, we still don't have a definitive answer.

For some animals, even asking the question seems absurd. No one who has any experience with the wily wild turkey could compare it to the foolish domestic turkey without understanding how much these two birds differ.

Few could think the Great Dane and the Pekingese belong in the same pack as a wolf.

But people still wonder about the cat.

OK—how is it that cats know when you open your camera on your phone?

There must be some sort of audio or vibration humans can’t hear?
