  1. #SodiumIonBatteries offer an alternative to tricky #lithium

    Oct 26th 2023

Excerpt: "Fortunately, lithium is not the only game in town. As we report this week, a clutch of firms are making batteries based on sodium, lithium’s elemental cousin. Since sodium’s chemical properties are very similar to those of lithium, it too makes for good batteries. And sodium, which is found in the salt in #seawater, is thousands of times more abundant on Earth than lithium and cheaper to get at. Most of the companies using sodium to make batteries today are also Chinese. But pursuing the technology in the West might be a surer route to energy security than relying heavily on lithium.

"Besides its abundance, sodium has other advantages. The best lithium batteries use #cobalt and #nickel in their electrodes. Nickel, like lithium, is in short supply. #Mining it on land is #EnvironmentallyDestructive. Proposals to grab it from the #seabed instead have caused rows. A good deal of the world’s cobalt, meanwhile, is extracted from small mines in the #DemocraticRepublicOfCongo, where #ChildLabour is common and working conditions are dire. Sodium batteries, by contrast, can use #electrodes built from #iron and #manganese [and wood #lignin], which are plentiful and uncontroversial. Since the chemical components are cheap, a scaled-up industry should be able to produce batteries that cost less than their lithium counterparts.

"Sodium is not a perfect replacement for lithium. It is heavier, meaning sodium batteries will weigh more than lithium ones of an equivalent capacity. That is likely to rule them out in some cases where lightness is paramount. But for other applications, such as #GridStorage or #HomeBatteries, weight is irrelevant. Several Chinese carmakers are even beginning to put sodium batteries in #ElectricVehicles."

  2. Xcel Energy has signed an electric service agreement to power a Google data center with 1,400 MW of wind, 200 MW of solar, and 300 MW of long‑duration energy storage.

It's that last part that's significant. It's an iron‑air battery system from Form Energy. With about 30 gigawatt‑hours (GWh) of capacity and a duration of roughly 100 hours.

This looks like the future of grid-scale storage. I doubt sodium-ion will be able to compete with the cost and capacity. All it needs is Iron, Air, and Water in a process that essentially releases energy as the iron rusts, then stores energy by turning the rust back into iron and oxygen. At a cost of about $20/kWh - 4x less than lithium batteries.

You are correct, NPP is not the single solution but important to highlight that we cant afford to shut down our current plants. We have to pick all the low-hanging fruit by subsidizing those and tax the rest. For instant control we need batteries.

One big thing regarding grid batteries is establishing a recycling standard for EVs so that old aging vehicle batteries with low capacity per weight ratio can be reused for the grid where weight is not an important factor. #gridstorage

  5. Hey! It’s @robsonfletcher on CBC talking grid storage in Alberta. This is an area Alberta needs to push ahead on so it’s good to hear it getting some attention.

Edit: Good little piece although I’m disappointed he didn’t mention pumped hydro at all, just batteries. Pumped hydro is old tech and the most efficient storage we can build but everyone seems to be focussing on batteries.

To provide full day, utility scale energy storage as more wind and solar power enter the grid, a flow battery fits the bill.

I really love that there is so much research, and the associated results flowing back, around all sorts of different approaches to batteries. Without a doubt, grid storage is now the big thing needed for variable power generation technology. Being storage, it can also be located where it is required for use.

  14. Long duration energy storage has yet to make a significant dent in the global energy profile. To date, the only widespread form of storage technology that can last longer than a few hours is the century-old “water battery,” in the form of hydropower reservoirs and their cousins, pumped hydro reservoirs.

On the plus side, hydropower dams and pumped storage systems already sport transmission infrastructure. Developers are eyeballing them for additional green power by adding floating solar arrays. However, hydropower facilities are site-specific, they disrupt habitats, and they are increasingly vulnerable to climate impacts.

BNEF Pioneers is in its 10th year of identifying “the most impactful and original technology innovations for advancing the low-carbon economy,” and Energy Dome is the first company to represent Italy in the competitive program. The winning technology is a closed-loop CO2 system that hits the magic 4-hour ceiling for short term energy storage, and then charges past it for up to 24 hours.

As for cost, that’s the sticky wicket — or not, as the case may be. Lithium-ion battery arrays are currently the system of choice for utility scale energy storage. The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has been tracking a downward trend in the cost of Li-ion arrays, based on a typical duration of 4 hours. Energy Dome estimates it can beat Li-ion on costs by a mile, delivering up to 6 times that duration at half the cost.
