During the two-day pilot, 27,000 passengers generated about 2,200 watt-hours of electricity. That is roughly 0.08 Wh per person, or about 7% of one home's daily electricity use. The energy powered nearby screens showing renewable energy messages.
The project was a marketing campaign by Spanish energy company Iberdrola, not permanent infrastructure. Bloomberg reported that scaling across the full Paris metro would not happen anytime soon since it is deemed too expensive. Iberdrola's own projection: 136 MWh/year if deployed network-wide, enough for about 40 homes annually.
A frequently circulated claim of 2,200 kilowatts per day confuses power (kilowatts) with energy (kilowatt-hours), inflating the figure 1,000x.
The physics is real but modest. A 70kg person walking generates about 8.4 joules per step. Even with millions of commuters, the harvestable energy is small compared to household needs. Useful as an awareness tool, not a power plant.
