  1. 1/ Let's start the new year with a new publication alert: why #baseload power plants are not essential for future power systems.

Perspective article from the German Academies of Sciences "Energy Systems of the Future" project with a stellar author team: cell.com/cell-reports-physical

There is a controversial debate over the need for “baseload” power plants. We argue that a secure, net-zero European electricity system based on variable #renewables is technically and economically viable when paired with extensive flexibility, #storage, and #interconnection options.

  5. Typical #Liberals: build more dams and burn more forests. Now it's put nuclear reactors near where workers live. #Baseload is the biggest lie. Wind + Solar + Storage means nuclear is a deadly lame duck. #QandA

  7. Viable Renewable Energy smashes heatwave peak demand records in my state (South Oz).
South Oz, was also the home of the first Tesla grid battery.

Tagging @collectifission because I know how much he loves playing Australian dodgeball 😀

  8. Power plants with a minimum output are passés,
    Say German engineers and scientists.

"#Baseload power plants supply electricity continuously, whereas so-called residual load plants run only intermittently when needed.

“A combination of solar and wind energy with storage, a flexible hydrogen system, flexible electricity demand and #ResidualLoad power plants will be necessary for a climate-friendly and reliable electricity supply,” the academies said. "

  12. This is something I was always wondering about the idea of base-load electric consumption. Even if say a nuclear power-plant produces a constant amount of power, consumption is not constant, so you need some form of storage to time-shift that production around. In Switzerland this was done with dams, but also by lowering the price at night and sending a special signal to households so they could heat up the water at night.

  14. The end of "Baseload" in Australia

Australia’s biggest coal generator AGL Energy is able to shut down coal units in the middle of the day, effectively making way for solar to dominate the grid.

The first trials have been held at Bayswater in the Hunter Valley, and involves a process called “two-shifting” – meaning it takes a unit offline and brings it back online within a 12 hour period.

-Geothermal energy can supply baseload power, unlike most renewables
-Baker Hughes testing simulation models and tech in a 300-foot test bore

  17. But did your energy REALLY come from you? Or did it go on a loop via the substation? Or did a coal plant power your household appliance? 😆

One thing is for sure: Coal fire power production is reducing over time, as more wind, solar & storage comes online. Only #wind & #solar are on a massive installation spike.

Gas power is the most interesting fossil fuel because it can be switched on and off quickly. Coal needs to stay warmed up just in case. That’s where “#baseload power” comes from.
