Youth clubs, trade unions, pubs: here's how Burnham can fix Britain's social recession | Gordon Brown

I’ve always had time for #GordonBrown but I do get annoyed with Nu Lab centrism with passive assertions like “we’ve lost [a] sense of social obligation” rather than my view which is that neoliberal radicals have deliberately undermined & imposed economics inimical to social solidarity. He almost gets there a page later when discussing Murdoch press. Still, I’ll probably read his book

#GordonBrown is the only UK Prime Minister with a PhD, but he does no #criticalThinking. He couldn't critique his disastrous #PFI, & he can't critique his unionism.
The UK is not cooperation. England has 84% of MPs, and the seat of govt. It dominates Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.
Since 1922, Ireland has been a small independent country cooperating with its neighbours. Scotland could cooperate too — but only if it dissolves the union.

have an abiding affection for brown (in spite of some things he's said about carbon capture ect)
'were seeds of these violations not sown with the Iraq war, which he supported with Tony Blair in 2003? “To some extent"...Blair now sits on Trump’s Board of Peace. While it’s promoted as an alternative peacekeeping agency, Brown sees it as essentially a corporate exercise. Its founding document, Brown argues, is closer “to an international property developer under the guise of making peace”. I begin a question and he interrupts: “I know what you’re going to ask.” What? “About Tony Blair. I don’t want to talk about Tony Blair.”'

Gordon Brown are you reading this and hanging your head in shame? Ok a rhetorical question of course he eon’t be.

Not a Brit, but often interested in the contrast in activity and policy from #TonyBlair and #GordonBrown, two previous (and successive, I think) Labour leaders: Blair is off with his business, employing over 1000 and making millions. And, it seems to me, tilting Right. Brown on the other hand has worked hard to establish equity, fairness, and compassion in his community. And to occasionally raise his voice as our collective conscience.

Opponents fallen away. Decades of manoeuvres make The Precious almost mine, mine
It's summer 2026, but almost summer 2007. Remember Broon?
His inevitable succession. Years to plan for office. A flurry of good announcements in tbe first hundred days. Then it all fell apart.
Broon had a plan, but no theme. By mid-autumn, #GordonBrown was flabby, drifting. By the spring, doomed.
Recall it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premiership_of_Gordon_Brown
Then look at #AndyBurnham. Same trajectory. #Popcorn!

Andy #Burnham's team want to replace Keir #Starmer without contest, says #TheGuardian. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/20/burnham-allies-confident-no-10-coronation-after-surge-backers-labour-leadership
His only plausible competitor is the repugnant Wes #Streeting 🤮, which makes a contest unappealing.
But Labour has been here before. In 2007 #GordonBrown bullied so many MPs to back him that no other nomination was numerically possible. Brown got his coronation, but was a political disaster. He simply couldn't communicate.
Maybe the repulsive Streeting could be a useful foil?

How long will Andy last?
Looks like #Burnham will win #Makerfield, and be Prime Minister by September. 🤮
But he has already committed to most #Starmer policies. So his popularity will soon crash. But when?
I think his trajectory will be a sort of accelerated #GordonBrown. GB took over as PM in June 2007. His poll boost peaked in late Sept. By end of 2007 his numbers were back to about the same as #Blair's.
Times are harsh. I reckon the Burnham bounce will be over before Christmas.

Novara Media | The Perks of Being Prince Andrew by Ash Sarkar
AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.
The article critiques Prince Andrew’s appointment as a UK trade envoy—a role secured largely through his mother’s influence—and examines the ensuing scandal tied to his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Although never charged, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office after documents suggested he shared confidential diplomatic information with Epstein and may have facilitated the trafficking of a woman to the UK for a sexual encounter. The piece notes earlier police investigations, a £12 million settlement with Virginia Giuffre, and accusations that Andrew misused RAF facilities for Epstein’s private jet, all while receiving a cushy position that lacked proper vetting. It also highlights former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s call for scrutiny, the royal family’s continued protection of Andrew despite being stripped of titles, and the broader implications for political figures like Keir Starmer and Peter Mandelson.
