Popcorn: The Only Grain That Performs
Last weekend, the village of North Loup, Nebraska, population somewhere around three hundred, threw its 125th Annual Popcorn Days. A carnival took over Highway 11 from Friday to Sunday. There was team penning and sorting, a turtle race, kids' games, a juvenile parade, a men's slow pitch tournament, sand volleyball, a street dance, and on Sunday the largest parade in the area to close the show. The theme this year was "Looking Back at 125 Years of Popcorn Days," which is what happens when the anniversary becomes the headline: the parade turns into a mirror. II spent my childhood summers in North Loup with my grandfather, in a house where the television pulled in exactly one signal, channel 10/11, and where the calendar bent around one August weekend the way other towns bend around Christmas. Here is my #recipe for microwave "kettle corn"
I have a made-to-purpose microwave popcorn bowl but any large microwave safe bowl with a _loosely_ fitted lid will do.
1/4 cup popcorn kernels
1 T icing sugar (powdered sugar)
1 T vegetable oil
1 T melted butter
2 pinches of saltPlace in large microwave safe bowl & give it a good stir. Place a microwave-safe lid/plate/etc on top (lid should cover all the bowl but not be fastened down (so nothing explodes, ok?).
Microwave on high for 1 min. 50 sec.*
Removed all popped kernels to a second bowl.
Place un-popped kernels, still in the first bowl, back in the microwave with the lid on for another 1 minute.*
This keeps pretty well for a few weeks in an air tight container, making a nce prepare-ahedd snack (or breakfast cereal).
* Your timing may vary, as a rule you should stop your microwave after you're able to count 2-3 second between pops to avoid burning

Hey fun fact popcorn used to be eaten as a breakfast cereal in America. I just tried it with some home made kettle corn (not in an actual kettle, just you add some powdered sugar to the popcorn some it's sweet and salty) and it's actually really good.
I used my home-grown mini popcorn so it's little kernels and it's a good size for cereal IMO.
I mean, think about it. Puffed grains? A little but sweet and a little crunchy? This is basically Honey Smacks / Honey Puffs

- More in containment and ability to be failure-operational? - See the last podcast episode on that.
- Or that "it's all infrastructure and hence FOSS needs to be nationalized, government run and paid from tax money" argument which is all too popular at the moment.
Or maybe that
- Force to internalize the FOSS risk back onto those that are possibly profiting from it argument?
After all, FOSS is the video-game edition of the literal sofa/cook top/... someone threw on the street and you thrifted it because it seemed to still be good enough to re-use for a while.
With the video game effect being that it immediately reappears once you took it. plingIntentionally commercial FOSS might be the slightly better looking loot, but with a line attached to it and usually intentionally missing parts for certain use cases. Which is completely fine.
All rules and regulations are present for this already. They're just large scale ignored across the board. Funnily even by a very large degree of those who create said FOSS.
I guess it's just easier to do nothing and enjoy freshly roasted smores on the ever burning garbage fire that Josh post described so nicely?
