  1. @petealexharris The #UK wants to be increasingly friendly with the European Union #EU. The EU includes the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland could, through the EU, make refusing a #BorderPoll extremely costly for the UK.

However, that would depend on the Irish government really wanting a #UnitedIreland, which, even though #SinnFein are currently in power, just ain't necessarily so.

  2. "There are expectations too that Sinn Féin would use Plaid Cymru and SNP victories next month to boost its demands for a poll on Irish reunification by 2030, making that central to its Northern Irish election campaign in May 2027"

  3. With a United Ireland vote possible, we should turn the page on our old symbols and create new symbols that everyone on the Island can rally around.

    Here’s a concept:

St. Patrick's Blue + two gold stars representing the two main traditions united, with a nod to the EU flag.

    What do you think?

  4. “With a #unitedIreland, there is no guarantee we could deploy our ballistic missiles”, says Rear Admiral Chris Parry ... as if there was something bad about being unable to blow up the world. 😡

Unionist Lord Paul Bew had invited Parry to address an informal meeting of MPs and Lords in Westminster. It was pure 19th-century imperial logic, viewing Ireland solely in terms of its military utility to Britain 🤮

  5. THREAD: No no no. 😡

Derry-based writer #PaulGosling suggests that a #UnitedIreland might involve joining #NATO and the British "Commonwealth", writing a new constitution, and allowing everyone in the 32 counties a choice of Irish or British citizenship. 🙄

Time to put a stop to this Irish Times agenda. 😡

  6. I’ve never been a fan of reactionary calls for a united Ireland, but given the dark path that #Britain—more specifically #England—is heading down, we Irish now have an obligation to protect the people of #NorthernIreland. Otherwise, they risk facing a purge by far-right extremists targeting republican nationalists, and in particular, people of the #Catholic faith. It’s also time for #Scotland to step up and push for a new referendum before it’s too late.

  7. Along with so many others, I will never advocate for a #UnitedIreland. I would take ten refugees any day over one of these boneheads behind this act of barbaric rascim. They are not and never will be Irish and our country has enough problems without having to accept or accommodate this lot.
    It's simply not worth it.

yeah, I remember spending hours after school looking up rebel movements online and coming across the IRA , Bloody Sunday, Maze prison , learning the difference between #ROI and #NI, the difference between Nationalist and Republican, the fight for a #UnitedIreland 🇮🇪 , etc.

    I should re-watch a few of those.

  16. On the topic of a #UnitedIreland, who do we believe? The #FT or the #BBC? The former suggest it will be worth €30 billion to the Irish economy, the latter suggest it could cost as much as €20 billion annually. #Ireland #NorthernIreland

  17. "In the absence of meaningful conversation about what kind of radical departure this new Ireland could be, we have instead an important yet circuitous debate over symbols and symbolism, flags and anthems.

An alternative vision of a united Ireland is urgently needed.

This is "a once-in-a-century chance to design and build a radical – and radically different – new state."

  18. If you really, really wanted to reignite without firing a shot, a very good way would be to tell Irish Nationalists and Republicans that, actually, a border poll will now require the support of a majority PLUS 10 or 20% more of the votes.

It would be a breach of the Good Friday Agreement and it would show that the English will not permit democratic constitutional change. It would smack of the gerrymandering that led us here.

  23. It is probably fair to say that has always seemed like a cold house for the young and liberal. Certainly very many of us moved away.

However, for much of that time, the censorious anti-feminist Catholic conservatism of the 26 counties seemed no better.

Now that has taken several grand and rightly-celebrated steps away from that legacy, whilst still imperfect, it offers a much warmer welcome home.

  28. Interesting quote from the #DUP's #JeffreyDonaldson

“...the people of #NorthernIreland will continue to vote to remain part of the sixth largest economy in the world”.

Except that post-Brexit UK is slipping down the rankings, Germany alone is the fourth largest economy, and the EU economy taken as a whole is only exceeded by the US.

So, on economic grounds alone, why would the people of Northern Ireland not vote to join the *second largest* economy in the world? #UnitedIreland

  29. charade of the #preciousunion - we are not equal parts, we are not all the same and we don't have a say in the rules that govern us.

The last seven years turned me from a contented #unionist to a passionate supporter of a #UnitedIreland.

I want the same right to self determination that we were told we had to respect when the outcome of that 2016 vote.

Also, the day the result was announced was my 40th Birthday! What a fecking birthday present that was...

#Brexit was and still an bad idea.

  30. El Regne Unit ha intervingut militarment 83 vegades a 47 països des de la II Guerra Mundial.

  31. CW: I live north of the border. I have siblings and children who live south of the border as well as in the north. The Irish border is an impractical encumbrance to my family and to my community and Brexit is destined to make it worse.
I honestly believe that the only real, practical and long term solution is a United Ireland.
