  1. "We have a funding system for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that is entirely based on the spending priorities of the UK government in England. The Welsh government has less borrowing powers than a local council, and it often publishes its final budget nine months into the financial year, because the Treasury has decided to change funding in England. This doesn’t work. And it can’t work"

  2. "The prime minister of England also doubles up as the prime minister of the whole of the UK. This is not ideal. The governor of California can’t also be the president of the US. There are clearly conflicting priorities"

  3. #IrishUnity used to be a fringe idea, but Brexit changed that and brought it back.

However, there's a risk that the same old interests will dominate. A new #Ireland should prioritize the environment, democracy, social justice, and inclusivity.

The project "Answering Ireland’s Call" aims to amplify grassroots voices and push for meaningful change; to shape a renewed Ireland based on current needs and values, avoiding a mere merger of two flawed states.

  4. ZNet staffer Bridget talks with Claire Mitchell, a writer and researcher from the North of #Ireland. She is author of the book The Ghost Limb: Alternative Protestants and the Spirit of 1798.

Claire talks about her unusual position of being a North of Ireland Protestant who is also #progressive and republican; about the political situation in the North of Ireland at the moment and what she would like to see emerging from current discussions about #IrishUnity.

  5. CW: English independence

Rather than having referendum on NI or Scotland or Wales remaining part of UK why not cut to the chase and declare English independence?
After all didn't they claim in Brexit debate that they wanted to take their country back?
Let us make no pretence that the opinions of those of us who live in Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales matter.

  6. @NationCymru Mark Drakeford needs to wake up.

The #UK doesn't work for anyone but #England because that's that way it was designed. It works great for them, so why should they change it?

  7. @swearylibrarian

If it #IrishUnity is going to happen. It should be after a intensive period of consultation and discussion. All of us need to know what will happen with the economic prospects, education, health and pensions.

Those are the issues that will matter for the future. We need a pathway for the eventual unification of this island. We need to know what it will look like. What will be voting on. Let's not repeat the #Brexit disaster.

  8. @jacqui76 agreed, i suspect few northerners want the healthcare model and housing crisis under FF/FG whichever side of the road they're from, plus there may always be a small minority who do see violence as a response to what they don't like, but for all Sunak's condescending words i think most people see #irishunity as the inevitable outcome eventually, one way or another. Like many, i hope it's a lot more than just changing the colour of the flag.

  9. @swearylibrarian
    the men of violence.

If the debate on #Irishunity is inclusive, well planned and well explained.

If it is shown that our lives and our kids & grand-kids are better in a new Ireland, then that will dictate what happens next.

  10. @genie_mac @JohnLoader6 @bullivant

If they had of been thinking they would have taken May's original Withdrawal Agreement deal, which kept the whole of the UK in SM/CU.

This would have cemented #NI place in the UK union for quite sometime. They could have pushed the discussion about #Irishunity back for quite sometime.

However, they let the power go to their head. They wanted to try to repeal the #GoodFridayAgreement, so they could have a Border back.

What is happening is on them!

  11. CW: End of the UK

31st of December marked the 30th anniversary of the break-up of Czechoslovakia to form the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
If Czechoslovakia can breakup in a peaceful way with a friendly outcome, why cannot same thing happen with a breakup of the UK?
Independence is way more normal than press would have us believe.

  12. Back to Medvedev: Slugger O'Toole:

"Dmitry Medvedev predicts Irish Unity next year…"

Obviously, Medvedev's though this Irish unity thing out fully because twelve months is quite a long time in the context of Irish history.

Dmitry Medvedev is as mad as a box of frogs.

  13. There may be no alternative to voting #Labour if you want the #Tories out, but I wonder how many voters in #Scotland, #Wales and #NorthernIreland now see independence or #IrishUnity as the real alternative - that is, an alternative to the archaic, undemocratic British state to which Labour is committed, while steering a course for another round of punishing austerity?

  14. CW: Irish politics

In the UK it is an article of faith that the NHS is the best health system in the world.

In Ireland, the health system is constantly bemoaned.

So in the context of #Irishunification #IrishUnity healthcare is a key issue.

A major 2018 Lancet study of health outcomes in 195 countries. It used a wide range of metrics.

Ireland’s health system ranked 11th best in the world. The UK’s 23rd.
