#UKLabour have announced their candidate for the #GreaterManchester Mayoral by-election caused by Andy Burnham being elected as MP for #Makerfield.
It's current leader of #Manchester City Council, and my ward councillor, Bev Craig. A very good choice in terms of experience running a major council, working with the GM Mayor's office etc.
But @bright_helpings pointed out that if she wins, as seems likely, we'll probably have another by-election to replace her as a ward councillor...

So, despite all the bluster by every party, what appears to have happened in #Makerfield is: if you normally voted for reform, the tories or the like, you carried on as normal; if you voted for any party that claimed to be of the centre or left, you voted for #Burnham.
This is either a ringing endorsement of the Labour candidate, or an act of collective grownupness by left voters in an attempt to fix things.
Either way, it's rather remarkable.

Many argued that #Trump lost to Biden in 2020 because of his blatant unrepentant misogyny captured in the Access Hollywood tape.
#Reform lost in #Makerfield for the same reason. Their choice of candidate was woefully out of his depth abut critically also woefully vetted by the party.
