Quite possible. I took this as an opportunity to start moving off Google Calendar, so I'm not familiar yet with Fossify calendar, or .ics either.

I see Fossify has "CalDAV sync" turned off. When I try turning it on, none of the options are for Gathio / my event group. I see no other sync option.

This morning was tough. I was frustrated because I wasn't able to finish my weekly review. Tasks and physical items have been building up, which makes the review take longer. I felt squeezed and was needing more rest and more choice.

I am grateful to my wife for watching the kids around lunch time. I was able to create and send an invitation for an open source video game night with my friends and family. I used https://gath.io/ to make the invitation. It felt good to use a free and open source (FOSS) tool for the invite. This is my first time doing a game night, so I hope it goes OK. I am excited!

The time my wife gave me today made a big difference. There is still more than I can handle on my plate. But after doing something meaningful today, I feel encouraged and hopeful.

@jagster Mobilizonkin on pystyssä ja varovasti kokeiltukin (itse). Värkki näyttää silti vähän tarpeettoman laajalta (uudelle käyttäjälle kauhean paljon asioita kälissä), ja voi olla että Gathio on itse asiassa parempi työkalu.

Jos ja kun facen puolelta pitää saada ihmiset käyttämään jotain muuta palvelua sen pitää olla kertakatsomisella riittävän yksinkertainen.

Yksinkertaisuus on käytettävyyttä, ja käytettävyys on yksinkertaista 😆

I had hoped – and really wanted – to be at Wuthering Bytes / Open Source Hardware Camp this weekend, but didn’t get that sorted out because of Reasons.

So, I spent today doing various other things instead.

• I’ve been invited to a couple of events that are arranged using Gathio recently. Gathio has support for ActivityPub federation (there’s an ActivityStreams type for an Event, so this is all another piece of how the fediverse can be used to follow and participate in a broad range of activities). I noticed that there’s a new documentation site for Gathio, but certain links and messages still point to the project’s now-discontinued wiki, so I sent a pull request to fix those.
• I’ve been playing a bit with Picotron, a fantasy virtual workstation from the folks that also make the PICO-8 virtual retro gaming system. I’ll probably write a bit more deeply on that sometime soon (I hope / if I get around to it).
• Our elderly neighbour asked me to go in to help with some issues with her email. It turned out that Microsoft has completely turned off the old DeltaSync service that her mail client had been set up with (the clue was a 404 error which was part of the otherwise incomprehensible message from her computer), so I reconfigured things to avoid going near Outlook / Live Mail – there was absolutely no way she would have been able to work any of that out. Really, I would like to refresh her machine with a nice clean and fast Linux distribution, but she’s older and very used to how things currently work, so I tried to keep the changes to a minimum.
• I learned that CloudHiker is a thing. Many rabbit holes to investigate.
• I tried out a few different Wayland compositors on the Pocket Reform. wlmaker is interesting – old-style WindowMaker but on Wayland (although I don’t think it supports rotation yet, which is a deal-breaker for now). I also tried hyprland, but couldn’t get it to display anything – the debug log checked out but the display was black. I’m not too bothered as I’m aware of certain issues with that project. The author of cpufetch has a patch ready that adds support for the CPU module that the Pocket Reform uses, I tested that today as well. I spotted a couple of config improvements that we can make in the default Pocket Reform image, so I’ll aim to submit merge requests on those. I posted some wallpapers to the community forum.
• I quickly made a Fediwall to aggregate conversations about #OSHCamp, since I was missing out!
• The great folks at WeDistribute have made an Events hub for Fediverse (and adjacent) events, which is excellent. I spotted there’s an ATProto talk in London on Tuesday, and I intend to get along to that. They also posted an interesting piece on Flohmarkt, a marketplace instance with Fediverse compatibility. So much interesting development lately.
• Caught up-to-date on The Repair Shop.

Tomorrow: a Makeroni meetup in Wimbledon.

(Bank Holiday) Monday: Hampton Court Food Festival.

Successfully used #gathio to organize an event this weekend. Really like the project and would love to self host it on my Raspberry Pi. However, it uses mongoDB and that seems tricky to run on there. So kinda considering forking the project to make it run on SQLite instead 🤔

Fediversity at O₄FFDEM

Last weekend FOSDEM took place in Brussels, Belgium. However it was O₄FFDEM that provided the space for about 20 people to meet and discuss the future of events in the Fediverse for the whole Saturday. Among them developers like @lesion (developer of Gancio), setop (upcoming coordinator of Mobilizon), @dreirik (foss.events), @laurin (contributor to ActivityPods) and community members, (h)activists and event organizers like @becha or @eest9, just to name a few, and myself. Eventually, there were people from half of Europe: Montpellier, Strasbourg, Graz, Amsterdam, Italy, Vienna, Ljubljana, and Rotterdam.

Expectations

It was impressive how, despite the number of people present, it was possible for the group to de facto moderate itself, in particular through the experienced careful intervention of a few at the right moments. We began with a short round of introductions, in which expectations for the day were also clarified. We first decided to talk about values, to clarify what needs and concerns are generally present. We were all united by the desire to become independent of Big Tech, although there were several completely different concepts of how this would be achieved from a single point of view in the mix.

Dilemmas

It has become evident that in the case of events, from of a software developer’s point of view, one cannot simply speak of users, but must distinguish between organizers and participants, although the distinction can also be blurred in the case of a small community. Following dilemmas were identified:

• regional vs global calendars
• topical vs mixed calendars
• aggregation vs autonomy
• moderation vs censorship

Advantages of a physical meeting

The discussion about these aspects was extensive and, admittedly, did not always seem to me to be very target-oriented. However, it was necessary to balance our different backgrounds and bring us up to the same level of knowledge and it became more concrete after the lunch break when we decided to compare and work out the intentions and use cases of the existing applications and developments in more detail. I could recap this in detail here, but I think it is best to write a stand-alone follow-up article. Each project has its own approach: some focus on local communities, some focus on private events an another wants to provide a way to organize larger political movements with as few social features as possible. On top of that, people have come up with use cases that no developer ever seemed to think of before.

One activist’s question, “What’s the difference between federation and interoperability?“, which had been floating around the room all day, was finally addressed in a satisfying way with examples. Even if all applications can successfully aggregate and display events of others, it does not mean that they respect all mechanisms that control how the event is listed, whether the event is joinable via ActivityPub, whether these joins have to be manually approved, whether some event details visibility have a certain scope, etc.

Calendiverse

Perhaps one of the most important points was to enable the creation of event calendars, which are also aimed at people who do not want to have an account anywhere, but are simply looking for events. From the point of view of people looking for events, regional or topic-specific calendars are particularly important. Which events are aggregated and shown on an individual platform would be in the hands of the platform operators, which would then automatically play a major role in moderation.

Why use ActivityPub?

ActivityPub covers most of the features iCal offers for creating calendars by aggregating multiple sources, but adds a few more:

• Follow relationships become tangible
• Social media like features:
  • Boosting
  • Liking
  • Replies
• Push, not pull based
• Joining (Participants management)
• Use moderation and governance tools from the Fediverse

Getting to a Common Ground

Mobilizon has already introduced a huge set of custom properties and ways to manage event objects in the ActivityPub world. We decided on a process to re-evaluate their choices and draft a Fediverse Extension Proposal (FEP) for the least common set of them. What makes an event:

• What: title, summary, content, etc.
• When: start-time, end-time, timezone (for displaying), recursion
• Where:
  • on/offline/hybrid
  • URL/location
  • Private locations which may be disclosed on participant’s acceptance
• From Whom
• To Whom: Public, Private, Unlisted
  • Why if not want to get listed just not “send” the event: e.g., Mobilizon -> federated groups -> federated private events
  • Let the sender of an event set the discoverability : the recipient might mistreat that

Fediversity at O₄FFDEM

Last weekend FOSDEM took place in Brussels, Belgium. However it was O₄FFDEM that provided the space for about 20 people to meet and discuss the future of events in the Fediverse for the whole Saturday. Among them developers like @lesion (developer of Gancio), setop (upcoming coordinator of Mobilizon), @dreirik (foss.events), @laurin (contributor to ActivityPods) and community members, (h)activists and event organizers like @becha or @eest9, just to name a few, and myself. Eventually, there were people from half of Europe: Montpellier, Strasbourg, Graz, Amsterdam, Italy, Vienna, Ljubljana, and Rotterdam.

Expectations

It was impressive how, despite the number of people present, it was possible for the group to de facto moderate itself, in particular through the experienced careful intervention of a few at the right moments. We began with a short round of introductions, in which expectations for the day were also clarified. We first decided to talk about values, to clarify what needs and concerns are generally present. We were all united by the desire to become independent of Big Tech, although there were several completely different concepts of how this would be achieved from a single point of view in the mix.

Dilemmas

It has become evident that in the case of events, from of a software developer’s point of view, one cannot simply speak of users, but must distinguish between organizers and participants, although the distinction can also be blurred in the case of a small community. Following dilemmas were identified:

• regional vs global calendars
• topical vs mixed calendars
• aggregation vs autonomy
• moderation vs censorship

Advantages of a physical meeting

The discussion about these aspects was extensive and, admittedly, did not always seem to me to be very target-oriented. However, it was necessary to balance our different backgrounds and bring us up to the same level of knowledge and it became more concrete after the lunch break when we decided to compare and work out the intentions and use cases of the existing applications and developments in more detail. I could recap this in detail here, but I think it is best to write a stand-alone follow-up article. Each project has its own approach: some focus on local communities, some focus on private events an another wants to provide a way to organize larger political movements with as few social features as possible. On top of that, people have come up with use cases that no developer ever seemed to think of before.

One activist’s question, “What’s the difference between federation and interoperability?“, which had been floating around the room all day, was finally addressed in a satisfying way with examples. Even if all applications can successfully aggregate and display events of others, it does not mean that they respect all mechanisms that control how the event is listed, whether the event is joinable via ActivityPub, whether these joins have to be manually approved, whether some event details visibility have a certain scope, etc.

Calendiverse

Perhaps one of the most important points was to enable the creation of event calendars, which are also aimed at people who do not want to have an account anywhere, but are simply looking for events. From the point of view of people looking for events, regional or topic-specific calendars are particularly important. Which events are aggregated and shown on an individual platform would be in the hands of the platform operators, which would then automatically play a major role in moderation.

Why use ActivityPub?

ActivityPub covers most of the features iCal offers for creating calendars by aggregating multiple sources, but adds a few more:

• Follow relationships become tangible
• Social media like features:
  • Boosting
  • Liking
  • Replies
• Push, not pull based
• Joining (Participants management)
• Use moderation and governance tools from the Fediverse

Getting to a Common Ground

Mobilizon has already introduced a huge set of custom properties and ways to manage event objects in the ActivityPub world. We decided on a process to re-evaluate their choices and draft a Fediverse Extension Proposal (FEP) for the least common set of them. What makes an event:

• What: title, summary, content, etc.
• When: start-time, end-time, timezone (for displaying), recursion
• Where:
  • on/offline/hybrid
  • URL/location
  • Private locations which may be disclosed on participant’s acceptance
• From Whom
• To Whom: Public, Private, Unlisted
  • Why if not want to get listed just not “send” the event: e.g., Mobilizon -> federated groups -> federated private events
  • Let the sender of an event set the discoverability : the recipient might mistreat that
