An amazing demonstration for International Women’s Day took place in Berlin yesterday, with an estimated 30,000 attendees, most of whom were women.
Later, when I searched the Fediverse for posts about the demonstration, I could only find three profiles other than my own.
This made me wonder about the discrepancy between what happens in the streets and what is reflected on social media. Social media can be a powerful space for political expression, dialogue, and connection. However, it requires a critical mass of users.
Some time ago, I ran a small poll asking women if patriarchal dynamics and male behavior on Mastodon, which is still largely dominated by white men, make participation harder.
Out of 169 responses, about 59% said yes (23% totally agree and 36% partially agree). Just 20% totally disagree. [1]
Even though that poll is far from representative, I couldn't forget the result when I noticed how little discussion there was here about the 30,000-person feminist demonstration in Berlin.
For the Fediverse to be a viable alternative to mainstream platforms, it must reflect the diversity and energy of offline movements. In my opinion, suggesting that "normies" should remain on Bluesky is not the way to go.

Tomorrow, I think I should mostly share and not post. Does anyone have recommendations for good feminist people I could follow?
After I questioned [1] this topic in a space dominated by white men from the global north, I can mention some nice people that joined the discussion:
- @ultrazool
- @NatureMC
- @veroandi
- @awfulwoman
- @kim
- @kristinHenry -
I didn't expect my question to the women of the Fediverse to generate such interesting responses. I discovered some interesting feminist profiles that I began following and read some thoughtful opinions, mainly from women.
However, I did expect that, in a male-dominated environment, white men from wealthy countries would display their machismo.

In a recent comparison of engagement around a Leave.X campaign post,[1] someone pointed out that a female journalist who is active in the feminist movement and critical of Big Tech had a very different experience than others.
The Mastodon post was shared twice, while the Bluesky version was shared over 200 times and received significantly more interactions. This raises questions about tech-savvy spaces like Mastodon and how they reflect broader societal issues.
For women on Mastodon:
Do you feel that the patriarchal dynamics and male behavior in this space, which is still largely dominated by white men, make it harder for women to participate?

@koen @bloodymirova @fediversity @EUCommission
Dear Koen,
The idea is great but I am still worried about the project governance. You say it is owned by https://oid.foundation/ but this page is basically empty. No statutes, no address, no names.
https://pixelfed.com/site/privacy doesn't name any controller or a DPO contact.
Where can I find more information on the @ngi #fediversity grant?

Congratulations to my colleagues @itteam from the @bfdi 💐 🎉 .
Their project https://social.bund.de is amongst the 3 bund.de domains that #Meta found worthwhile for AI scrapping. I can only encourage all eligible public services to join this server and have a say for the training of Meta's next AI model.

@wolf I guess you mean the #Fediversity category on the #SocialHub.
https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/c/fediversity/10
Your proposal reminds me of https://libreplanet.org/wiki/User:Hellekin/A_User_Perspective_Of_GNU_Social written 15 years ago.

@arda @f @ssg I've been thinking of what are the best and easiest ways of getting people into a #tech #cooperative. That is, self host as a local community.
#Fediversity shows one such way, via #NixOS. In this #NixFlake we see an automated setup for a set of services, like #Mastodon, #Peertube and #Pixelfed.
You basically fork this, modify its variables and run it on your server and you should have your own platforms up and running.

Preparing a new pixelfed server to scale to the first million users, and beyond 🚀
Pixelfed.social will remain open.

@Danie van der Merwe I own pretty much everything I do online, because I host everything myself. DNS, e-mail, cloud, social media, the works.
That's been my job for a long time, but that's not an option for most people.
I'm part of a project however, #Fediversity, that makes that possible for the world at large: owning your online presence, by using open software that allows you to to up sticks and move to another provider any time you want, or even run everything on your own hardware.
You'd need your own domain, of course, which is the only thing you never really own.
The idea is to make a complete hosting infrastructuur available that anybody with a bit of technical knowledge can run to offer all kinds of hosting for end users. Mastodon, e-mail, Nextcloud, Matrix, PeerTube, everything you need.
End users can click their stuff together, and if they want to move, they can simply export all their data and settings, and import it somewhere else.
Real online freedom, no strings attached.

The @fediversity category at SocialHub can now be followed from the fediverse.
Thanks to the Discourse developers who added support for forum federation over ActivityPub, posts on Discourse forums like SocialHub can now be followed from the fediverse. Each category on the forum can be turned into a group actor, that works like a Guppe group, a Lemmy community, or a K/Mbin magazine.

Hi team @JoinFediverseWiki, I'm messaging you to invite you to help me get some conversations going at the #Fediversity category on SocialHub;
https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/c/fediversity/
The category was set up as discussion space for people working on pan-fediverse reference websites; guides and manuals, instance mapping, software research, etc. With the goal of allowing us to coordinate our efforts, support each other's work, avoid unnecessary duplication, etc.

You know me too well. You still win a #Fediversity sticker. I wil give it to you at the next @nluug conference on the 5th of november.
-
@dansup wonderful software that #pixelfed 👍

It'll be a while before it's usable, but NixOps4 did its first thing!
