  1. I love as looking through downloads from a year ago today and found this cover of a #folkways record. It is marvellous and I wish I could listen to it. #vinyl

  2. Lucinda Williams, Ramblin’ On My Mind, 1979 on Folkways

Attributed to “Lucinda” mono-nymically, this was Williams’ debut solo album, released in 1979 on Folkways (which became Smithsonian Folkways in 1987).

She’s accompanied by  John Grimaudo on 6-string guitar (she plays 12-string and sings), and the album was produced by Tom Royals, an attorney for whom this is the only producing credit – he was a friend of her father. It was recorded at Malaco Studios in Jackson, Mississippi.

It’s a collection of blues, folk, and country covers, some traditional and some by named artists: Robert Johnson, A.P. Carter, Memphis Minnie, Sleepy John Estes, Hammie Nixon, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Joe Hayes and Jack Rhodes.

My copy is a 2021 reissue, but I’m not sure where I got it from.

Pretty sure Woody’s recordings are mostly over on Smithsonian/Folkways,(for now)

Some at the Library of Congress issued by Electra/Rounder in the 90s and are streaming but the extensive notes are missing 😤

#Folkways keeps the old Arhoolie Records albums available — including tons of #zydeco #conjunto & #cajun #accordion because unlike the rest of the US folk revival, Austrian-born Chris Strachwitz was not afraid of the squeezebox

  13. #NowPlaying #Folkways ❝In the 1950s and 60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. This is the first compilation of music drawn from his fabled collection.❞ smithsonianfolkways.bandcamp.c

  14. #NowPlaying Here’s a sampling of the music released on #Folkways that has defined and redefined the fabric of American music since 1948. bndcmpr.co/f15f6c1a

  15. #NowPlaying #Podcast ❝I decided that I would become like an encyclopedia. You don’t eliminate “A” because nobody buys “A” … [I see #Folkways] not as a business, but as a documentation, as a depository. I don’t think many people could operate the thing as a business without saying why carry on such a thing where you might lose $200-$300 a year? It’s a problem. I haven’t got the answer.❞ H/T @AqiDraco si.edu/sidedoor/recording-worl

  16. #ChrisStrachwitz was rare among American folk revivalists for appreciating the #Accordion before it had it's first "revival" in the 1980s (led by artists he helped bring to attention)

He laughed telling me how much #AlanLomax hated accordions (Mentioned in my #AccordionRevolution 🪗📚🤓)

Thanks to clearer ears like Chris’s, we have reissues like these of #CliftonChenier

  17. Pancakes have been made and consumed, although I'm one of those people who does Pancake Day without doing Lent, because I'm non-religious but I just like sweet food. Although I do like the folk tradition too!

A record of Northumbrian folkways collected in the 1920s claims that pancakes are eaten here on Shrove Tuesday, "and always have been", a bold claim that I love for what it says about folk memory.

Other customs for the day included the ringing of the "Pancake Bell"(otherwise known as the Shriving Bell), a holiday for apprentices, and the playing of football matches - one of which is still famously played on the Pastures at Alnwick on Shrove Tuesday.

  22. Imbolc. St Brigid's Day. 1st of February.

Imbolc is recorded in early medieval Irish sources and was also historically celebrated in Scotland and the Isle of Man. It's generally believed that the origin is older, pre-Christian, and the date is important to many modern pagans as the start of spring. It's also the feast day of St Brigid, mother saint of Ireland, and traditions included the weaving of Brigid's Crosses from rushes. Many believe that Brigid is a Christianised version of a pre-Christian goddess, although she is also recorded as a real historic figure who founded the Abbey of Kildare. It may be that two figures have been conflated.

Imbolc is not recorded as ever being celebrated here in Northumberland, but the reasons for celebrating it as an agricultural festival would have been just as important here. The season for sowing, the start of the lambing, the return of the light, and the promise of warmer, less lean days to come.

  27. Seeing an ad announcing that the venerable #Folkways Records (#SmithsonianFolkways these days) is looking for someone with "DSP" experience, which I'm just enough of a geek to realize couldn't mean Digital Signal Processor, but I'm also nostalgic about pre-commercialism Usenet and know nothing about digital marketing and online ad sales...
Found an alternative DSP for Folkways to look at:

And for my own grudging edification:

  28. #nowplaying - #peteseeger put out so many LPs on #folkways that many are analogous to semi-casual bandcamp drops. side A of "the rainbow quest" from 1960 is pete in one of my favorite tender/mellow modes, including the 1st recording of "where have all the flowers gone," except all the songs are medlied together as choruses/fragments, intended for somber collegiate singalongs, i suspect. side B is more topical/newsy, bringing #ewanmaccoll / #peggyseeger songs to american ears.
