Be interesting to know if it’s just availability, or cost or style?

Some of the nicest one-row so called #Cajun accordions have been custom built in #Louisiana over the years

Not so, larger three-rows, or fully chromatic piano #accordion like Clifton Chénier played that made it possible to mix in blues and R&B to create #zydeco

Early one-row 🪗 couldn’t play #blues easily so it got left out of most Black American music 🤷🏽

#Zydeco is the exception with backstory

    🪗 didact 2:

And I think Boozoo Chavez was mostly known for playing three-row diatonic #accordion, not the one-row that became more popular with younger #Creole #zydeco players

  3. “Sa M’Appel Fou (They Call Me Crazy)” from Clifton Chenier’s classic 1976 zydeco album Bogalusa Boogie. #cliftonchenier #zydeco #creole #nolamusic #vinyl #recordcollection

  4. Glimmer Twins nepřispívají na tribute alba. V případě pocty #Zydeco akordeonistovi #CliftonChenier Mick Jagger odložil svoji pařížskou fráninu a udělal si domácí úkol.

  5. Just saw that the historic Grant Street Music Hall in #Lafayette Louisiana, housed in an old Fruit Warehouse built circa 1898 has found new ownership, and is still offering live #LousianaMusic , ranging from blues & #zydeco , country as well as contemporary #HipHop and other entertainment. There's street #foodtrucks outside for the hungry late night crowd, and a new owner promising more security to curb the occasional fist fights and parking lot violence... What's not till like?

  6. Archivní klenot z cernejpudink.cz: Představujeme vám krále hudebního stylu zydeco Cliftona Cheniera. Narodil se před 100 lety. Z akordeonu vydoloval zvuk Louisiany – od ropných polí po Grammy. Příběh odvahy a nezdolného ducha, který stále rezonuje.

  7. Tonight’s episode of @accordionnoir radio will praise the protesters in #LosAngeles standing up (with an occasional #accordion) against abuses of power 🪧

Also #Zydeco rubboard master Cleveland Chenier’s birthday — the day before mine
    (approaching #CliftonChenier’s 💯th birthday, June 25, 1925)

And a farewell to #BrianWilson accordion aficionado 🏖️

Pretty sure Woody’s recordings are mostly over on Smithsonian/Folkways,(for now)

Some at the Library of Congress issued by Electra/Rounder in the 90s and are streaming but the extensive notes are missing 😤

#Folkways keeps the old Arhoolie Records albums available — including tons of #zydeco #conjunto & #cajun #accordion because unlike the rest of the US folk revival, Austrian-born Chris Strachwitz was not afraid of the squeezebox

I’m convinced if/when the next #accordion revival (upheaval?) comes, Brazilian #forró will be the next #zydeco

If only we all spoke Portuguese 🇧🇷🪗

  10. @SrRochardBunson @rnf

After the great fall from the heights of the 1950s when they were importing 200,000 accordions a year for sale in the US

By 1976 it was 13,000 😞 It was a hard time

But in Dec 1987 there was a whole issue of #Keyboard Magazine dedicated to accordions with #WeirdAl on the cover

Inside it had dozens of global artists from all styles, #experimentalMusic #classicalMusic #zydeco #PopMusic #norteno

    Amazing

  15. Every time I feel low I only need to remind myself that Keith Frank recorded a zydeco version of “Walking On Sunshine” and instantly I’m reminded of just how goddam awesome the world can really be.

  16. Special Memorial #ChrisStrachwitz Episode of @AccordionNoir Radio

Sharing bits of a 2014 interview with Chris talking about his years working with #Accordion greats like #CliftonChenier in the early days of #Zydeco

    And the monumental work Chris did at #ArhoolieRecords sharing #Cajun #Creole #Conjunto #Norteno #Bluegrass and #Trad #FolkMusic

Thanks Chris for appreciating accordions, unlike many #FolkRevival peers who [he said] just wanted to “bang on guitars” 🎸❤️‍🔥🪗

  17. #ChrisStrachwitz was rare among American folk revivalists for appreciating the #Accordion before it had it's first "revival" in the 1980s (led by artists he helped bring to attention)

He laughed telling me how much #AlanLomax hated accordions (Mentioned in my #AccordionRevolution 🪗📚🤓)

Thanks to clearer ears like Chris’s, we have reissues like these of #CliftonChenier

  19. I feel like Marjorie Taylor Greene is ruining everything. (Except zydeco music — nothing can ruin zydeco music.) She’s an idiot with a platform, and that’s never worked out well. See: Joseph McCarthy, George Wallace, Geraldo Rivera, Jerry Springer. #zydeco #marjorietaylorgreene #racist #idiots #JerrySpringer #Geraldo

  20. @accordionnoir
    #Funaná is music that uses the #accordion + hand #percussion (🪇 #MaracasEmoji 2023!) in Cape Verde 🇨🇻

It definitely shows musical ties across the #AfricanDiaspora

But interestingly, the accordion didn’t come to similar musics like #Louisiana #zydeco, #Brazil’s #forró, #cumbia in #Colombia, or other African influenced cultures until the 1860s or so

So the traditions developed in isolation from each other in many ways
