  1. Hi Mastodon,

I’d like to reintroduce myself and introduce my album “A Cufflink-Wearing Guy”.

I write songs and over the past 6 years roughly, I’ve collected 10 from about 100 to be recorded, mixed and mastered. As of today, those 10 songs are available to listen to at bandcamp as the album “A Cufflink-Wearing Guy” (alastairleonard.bandcamp.com/a)

There are songs about fleeting marketplace romances (Sunflowers), and going in search of your life’s purpose (Desert Rose). There are other songs about taking the easy road and waking up late (Mid-Morning Guy) and the housing crisis in Australia (Yoshino Removals). There are even more songs — about bad haircuts (West Coast Haircut) and the disappearance of the bees (Honey Bee). The title track follows a pair of cufflinks given to me as a young man and their trajectory through the following decades. All the lyrics are up there so you can read along while listening if that’s your preference.

    The music is roughly what I’d call indie-pop including jangly guitars numbers and piano ballads but there are forays into country twang, latin percussion, and doof. Some of my influences include #jeffreylewis #bjork #davidberman #cassandrajenkins #dangelo #leonardcohen #hopesandovalandthewarminventions #lucindawilliams #jenslekman #jonathanrichman #ninasimone #arethafranklin #pixies #thecure #thefieldmice #thesundays #thelemonheads #themagneticfields #tmbg #thegobetweens #motown

Attention is a commodity these days and I don’t expect too many people will hear the record; but if you do feel inclined to listen and can find a moment, I hope you find something joyful in these songs. Creating A Cufflink-Wearing Guy has been a labour of love. Mostly love, a little labour. Until next time, keep looking on the bright side. Thanks for reading. AL

  2. Lucinda Williams - World's Gone Wrong

There's a danger to these days
You can feel it in the air
    Evil has come to play
    You can feel it everywhere
There's a fear in these days
    Shadows in the eyes
When you know what they say
It's the place of truth and lies
There's a danger to these days

  4. Well, tonight's show was an A+, definitely my favorite of the ones I've caught so far. This guy David Mansfield out the entire show on violin and pedal steel made every song better with his presence. First hour was a psychedelic bliss-out, ambient YLT perfection with lots of oozy exploration. Second phase was a full-throttle ass-kicking. Everyone sounded amazing and the flow was exquisite. Then opener Lucinda f'in Williams (!) out for an extra poignant encore. Hanukkah Yo La Tengo at its finest.

Coincidentally, my YLT.50 according to NedBase™, which is absolutely bonkers to me. Looking forward to night #8.

  7. Lucinda Williams, Ramblin’ On My Mind, 1979 on Folkways

Attributed to “Lucinda” mono-nymically, this was Williams’ debut solo album, released in 1979 on Folkways (which became Smithsonian Folkways in 1987).

She’s accompanied by  John Grimaudo on 6-string guitar (she plays 12-string and sings), and the album was produced by Tom Royals, an attorney for whom this is the only producing credit – he was a friend of her father. It was recorded at Malaco Studios in Jackson, Mississippi.

It’s a collection of blues, folk, and country covers, some traditional and some by named artists: Robert Johnson, A.P. Carter, Memphis Minnie, Sleepy John Estes, Hammie Nixon, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Joe Hayes and Jack Rhodes.

My copy is a 2021 reissue, but I’m not sure where I got it from.
