"Boll Weevil" is a traditional #blues song, also known by similar titles such as "Boweavil" or "Boll Weevil Blues". Many songs about the #bollWeevil were recorded by blues musicians during the 1920s through the 1940s. However, a rendition by #LeadBelly recorded in 1934 by folklorist #AlanLomax led to it becoming well known. A 1961 adaptation by #BrookBenton became a pop hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Fats Domino's "Bo Weevil" is a different song.

#NowPlaying - Rama: Nuhara
Amazing backstory. Halfway through this rekkid and it's a ripper. Gabriele Bazza's vocals... damn.
"For me, this was a way to say, it’s OK if I’m Sicilian and I shout when I talk, it’s OK to talk in the richness of dialect. I don’t have to be ashamed.”

Checking out an album where Alan Lomax himself performs folk and blues songs he learned traveling across Texas. He has a good voice for rustic folk/country/blues.

In honour of our new age of #OutlawHeroes, a blast from the past from way back in March 1940, #AlanLomax talking with #WoodyGuthrie about Charles Arthur Floyd whom you all know as #PrettyBoyFloyd
as through this world I've rambled
I've seen all kinds of men
some will rob you with a six-gun
some with a fountain penhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3NjJUjkpiI

#Bales2023FilmChallenge August 22: #folklore on #FolkloreDay
On May 1 an ancient procession goes around #Padstow, #Cornwall. How ancient, no one really knows. Locals may describe it as a pagan fertility rite but even their generational memory draws a blank and no living soul can put an age on it. #AlanLomax's Oss Oss Wee Oss (1953) is probably the best known visual documentation of the #ObbyOss festival ☞ https://write.underworld.fr/settima/oss-oss-wee-oss-1953

Questions I’d like to askChris Strachwitz said Lomax complained about all the Accordions in his Mexican border documentary Chulas Fronteras
Chris was like, Alan, have you been to the Mexican border in the last 30 years?

Mister Jelly Roll has Alan Lomax siting there talking with Louis “Big Eye” Nelson about “Charley” [sic Henry] Peyton’s Accordiona Dance Band, where the first jazz musician Buddy Bolden got his startAnd Lomax and other jazz historians never bothered to ask anything else about this accordion band that kicked off all of jazz?!?
Come on! 🪗❤️🔥🎺 🎶

#ChrisStrachwitz was rare among American folk revivalists for appreciating the #Accordion before it had it's first "revival" in the 1980s (led by artists he helped bring to attention)
He laughed telling me how much #AlanLomax hated accordions (Mentioned in my #AccordionRevolution 🪗📚🤓)
Thanks to clearer ears like Chris’s, we have reissues like these of #CliftonChenier

`What Morton called "Spanish" were the tresillo and habanera rhythms of the Cuban contradanza ("habanera"). Morton demonstrated the "tinge" to Alan Lomax in the 1938 Library of Congress recordings. What is known in Latin music as the habanera rhythm is also known as the congo, tango-congo, and tango`

I recently found this sealed original Atlantic stereo copy. These can still be found at not-crazy prices.
The man on the cover was a little known Mississippi cotton farmer named Fred McDowell. There are giants among us in this world, and there are some records that are more magic than material.

That’s a page from my Accordion Revolution: A People’s History of the Accordion in North AmericaFrom an entertaining chapter called, The Folk Revival:
The Accordion
Betrayed ❤️🔥🪗I had a good time with that one
It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but doesn’t spare the fact that #AlanLomax hated the #accordion, and #FolkMusic might’ve been a bit different if he personally had not
So that chapter is a lot of fun. Only one person has complained

I went on a spree years ago buying these collections from Rounder Records. He also went to the Caribbean, Ireland, and bunch of other places, but the Southern Journey comps made a big impact.Probably my favorite from this one:
