  1. CW: Mental health - yet another mood slump; meds

We managed to do productive things today that needed doing and ensure that wife and us had a healthy, tasty dinner.

We helped wife several times and looked after the cats.

We even did things just for ourselves that brought us some joy.

And yet it's evening time and we're crashing mood wise yet again

We'd been feeling it slowly creep up on us for hours, so we've just given in and taken some diazepam.

We'd rather have had some zopiclone, even though it makes stuff taste weird to us for the next day, as that always knocks us out super fast, but we've none left.

At least the diazepam tablets we have are 10 mg, rather than the standard 2.5 mg.

Still hoping for a permanent solution that doesn't require that, but we're limited by the structural systemic indifference of the NHS, so it's often more difficult than herding cats.

If you read this post and have the ability, please share something joyful with us, especially short silly videos, like this. We could do with a little silliness and mirth right now.

  2. This report challenges digital algorithms that label BPD as a 'villain' narrative. We demand compassion, viewing erratic behaviour not as calculated abuse, but as a desperate fight against internal pain and fear of abandonment.

  3. Music is such a great alternative to direct communication sometimes, especially (but not exclusively) if you're a neurospicy person who experiences any level of alexithymia, verbal shutdowns, or emotional dysregulation.

We often cannot tell people how we're doing or feeling if they ask us.

Even if we know how we're feeling, have the ability to form the words, and have the emotional regulation to describe everything, there are so many other factors that might make it too difficult, even overwhelming, to do so.

By comparison, sharing a song -- even one without any lyrics -- can do the audio equivalent of showing the answer more than we can tell it with words.

We need to remember to do this more often.

  8. CW: ADHD meds - positive

New prescription arrived this morning 🥰

We'll be starting the guanfacine Monday night, as Monday is the beginning of a week in the UK and -- for highly-neurospicy reasons -- we need to start any regular medications on a Monday (the start of the week).

We're aware that the order of the days of the week don't make any logical sense, but we live in a country that follows the ISO 8601 weekday order, which means weeks starts with the moon and end with the sun.

Also, yes: we're aware we're likely OCD too, but we can't really do anything about that right now 😅

Someone should really redo the weekday, as well as the entire Gregorian calendar, to make them make actual sense.

  13. All these emotions…

...which are so hard to understand... Sometimes emotions are easy to understand. Someone you love passes away, you feel very sad and maybe even depressed. Someone you trusted made an error that they don't acknowledge but it did hurt you, you may feel disappointed and maybe also anger. I have always struggled with emotions. Sometimes I had too many, sometimes I showed too few... And at times it was very difficult for me to understand why I was feeling a certain way. And it also has not been easy to describe my feelings and emotions to others. And I have dealt with emotions in certain situations that others didn't understand, or didn't find appropriate, and I've been told may times to not "be a bad sport" and to just deal with it by moving on. 14. CW: Mental health (silly tautology); emotional dysregulation

One of the worst things about emotional dysregulation is that you can't regulate your mood well 😅 :MentalHealthFlagHeart:

  15. As a reminder, there are people in this world who don’t wake up in the middle of every night with traumatic memories.

But if you are somebody who does, there’s really good #trauma treatment these days. Techniques like #EMDR and learning about #EmotionalDysregulation are very effective.

My sage advice is to believe in yourself and your beliefs and always keep good people around you who treat you nicely. If you are in an unhappy place, remember to keep your chin up and keep trying.

  16. @enantiomer

I recently went through therapy for a bunch of things that happened when I was very young. Meditation really worked for me healing some #EmotionalDysregulation that I’ve always dealt with. Very effective.

  17. What Is Stimming?

Stimming is a way to bring order to our nervous system.

    Rory MacLeod at Flickr

The explanation I’m going to give you here is that of a layman trying to understand himself. I am not a psychologist, or a psychiatrist. I don’t know that this is a generalizable explanation even. Maybe it holds only for some neurodivergent folks but not others? I have no idea.

Neurodivergent folks talk about being emotionally dysregulated. This dysregulation can manifest in multiple ways. The dysregulated individual may experience intense negative emotions, mood swings, or even difficulty identifying emotions, etc. However, what happens in the brain of a dysregulated person is not entirely clear to me.

What if what happens internally in the brain is some sort of electrical mess? I won’t call it an electrical storm. I don’t think it is as bad as a storm. The electrical storm phenomenon is associated with epilepsy and seizures. So it is not a storm, but it is, for a lack of a more descriptive word, an electrical mess. This mess prevents the electrical currents from going where they should go in an ordered manner.

One of the ways a neurodivergent person can handle emotional dysregulation is to stim. A stim is some sort of stimulation of the nervous system. Flapping your hands can be stimming. Petting an animal can be stimming. Even merely listening to music can be stimming too. Now, stims usually have a rhythm to them. To take the examples already given, flapping your hands has a rhythm. Petting an animal has a rhythm. Listening to music definitely has a rhythm too.

I think the rhythm of the stim acts as some sort of force that regiments the electrical mess that is happening in the brain. I don’t think this is a perfect analogy, but the mess is akin to a non-Newtonian fluid flowing aimlessly. Then the rhythm of the stim are like vibrations that regiment the fluid into some sort of functional pattern.

I can’t find a better explanation for my fondness for music. I have it playing any chance I get. When I was younger, I studied with music playing on my boombox, and I tapped the desk to its rhythm. Nowadays, I have music playing all day long in my apartment. I even have it playing when I go on my solitary walks, or when I drive. It keeps the electrical currents in my brain functional.

As I said, the analogy is not perfect. The non-Newtonian fluid typically has no function. If you need to see a non-Newtonian fluid in action, you should watch the following video. (Regular readers will recognize it from my article about the self.)

  18. CW: abuse trauma emotional issues

    #EmotionalDysregulation #adhd #trauma

When you have little capacity for emotional regulation you live a life where you suppress emotional expression not only for your own safety, but the safety of others. You know from past experience that extreme expressions of emotion come upon you suddenly and often become all consuming. You don't realize you've damaged others or yourself until after the fact, until it's too late.

Now, let's say you encounter a person who takes advantage of you and abuses you leaving you in a traumatic emotional state. You then are kind of caught in this cycle of self abuse, fixating on your inability to regulate your own emotions and incapable of finding solace or understanding in yourself. You can't make heads or tails of whether not you acted badly or someone did something bad to you. In the course of a single day you move in and out of insane ad hoc rationalizations trying to make sense of everything and never landing on anyone narrative with concrete certainty.

You've done this for days, weeks, and now months. You experience hallucinations, trauma induced responses to any related stimuli, and are so emotionally frayed you become numb. You just kind of exist, pretending to be functional, watching your life erode around you. There's no way out.

Later this week I’ll be talking about making a co-regulation plan and deep diving into a specific emotion: anger.
