We are on a precipice. Solar is the new and plenty of it. Where we build solar is becoming a heated debate ( that is unintentional pun but it is quite apt)
Maniatoto is now facing that challenge too. A large landscape of open country. Ideal you might think for 660 hectares of solar panels.
Oddly enough, one of its small towns, Naseby, just became our latest Dark Sky Community. It also is home to an ice curling rink. Which both need no sun. It's a popular tourist town because of those features.
The McKenzie country will soon face a similar delema. Other parts of the country are and have already.
Electricity generation has a cost and infrastructure to power the insatiable need for energy we demand.Maniatoto is about to join the rest I fear.

We had free #electricty today between 1300-1400. Here in the #UnitedKingdom, it’s a windy, sunny day, so, plenty of #renewables presumably pushed the wholesale price negative. I’m on a tariff that doesn’t go negative, but my half-hourly meter readings allow my supplier (#OctopusEnergy) to offer free energy. Trouble is, using in. My #SolarPV tops up my hot water, which was too hot for the #heatpump to kick in, so, I ran the oven to bake some #bread, cut the lawn, and boiled the ketlle. #Winning

It's like water rationing in #drought and private pools and golf courses no longer permitted to use water.
Private pools are fun for only a few people and don't serve a general purpose for the many. With scarce resources, such activities are the first to be culled.
#Bitcoin or #cryptocurrency and their #energy use is like water for private pools during a drought. They're useless activities but cost a LOT of energy.
Until everything and everywhere globally is running on emission-free renewables, such activities must pause. Yes, everywhere and everything. There are idiots who think if they run their mining on #electricty from a nearby hydro, they're home free. But that CO2-free electricity is stolen from activities that serve the many which continue to emit CO2 because of that narrow-minded, egotist idiot. -

Although the current financial model of installing domestic #solarpanels requires a pretty long-term view of any 'return' partly due to low feed-in rates for surplus #electricty generated, partly due to the partial withdrawal of state support in the UK & partly due to installation costs, nevertheless people are increasingly (again) installing where the only short/medium term gain is the #greenenergy benefit itself.

People, if you are making serious efforts to save energy, make sure that you are taking meter readings and submitting them every month. Our actual gas usage for the last month is 13% of the usage estimated by the supplier.
