How #Australia combines modern tech and #IndigenousKnowledge to fight #wildfires
by Lana Lam, 1 August 2026
Excerpt: "Yebra has spearheaded an innovative project, bringing together millennia-old knowledge in Australia's #Indigenous communities with cutting-edge #SatelliteImagery to help detect where fires are most likely to break out.
The satellite images pick up the 'fuel moisture content' in the landscape, which signals where there might be a large amount of fuel, such as dry leaves, grass, shrubs and bark. But such data provides just one part of a bigger picture.
"That's where the likes of Adrian Webster come in.
"Growing up on the south coast of New South Wales (NSW), Webster learnt how to read the environment or 'country' - the term Indigenous Australians use for their ancestral homeland – from his elders.
"Using Indigenous ecological knowledge – a plant's colour and scent, for example, or the shade cover of trees - he can verify information in the satellite images from Yebra's team.
" 'She had all this amazing data, but there was no translation to what it meant on the ground, so it was kind of useless,' he explains.
" 'But through an Indigenous perspective, it was not useless. It was a map that could guide you through the country and, if you understood it, take you directly into a place that is ready to burn.'
"For Webster, assessing the land involves him 'literally digging and going underground,' he says.
" 'We're looking at the subsurface level and then everything from that up beyond the canopy.'
"Yebra said there was a 'remarkable agreement' between Webster's local knowledge and the satellite data, demonstrating the combined value of Indigenous expertise and Western science."

SOURCE: SOCIALPSYCHOLOGY.ORGTITLE: How Europe Can Prevent a Repeat of This Year's Devastating Wildfires
Source: Science
A wave of wildfires across Southern Europe has so far this year burned more than half a million hectares—an area equivalent to Grand Canyon National Park—far exceeding the area burned by August 2025, the worst year on record. Indeed, since the 1980s, the number of "fire weather" days—scorching, dry, breezy days—has more than doubled across much of the region, exacerbated by climate change. What, then, can be done to avoid more years like 2026?

Cal Fire has recognized the Ventura County Fire Protection District as a fire risk reduction community, effective now through July 2028. This is important because (a) VCFPD is the agency responsible for fire prevention and response in Thousand Oaks and (b) recognition brings priority consideration for Cal Fire’s Wildfire Prevention Grants and helps inform wildfire risk ratings.

Well, next week is going to be a blur. Helping support a damage assessment, speaking on a wildfire panel at a utility conference, and making a trip to see some family after a crisis.
Glad that we have some mild weather compared to what could hit the East, but I would do unmentionable things to get some snow out here.

Tonight the @conejoopenspace board voted 5-0 to remove 23 Mexican fan palms from open space west of Lynn between Arboles and Flores, near Shenandoah.
VCFD recommended the removals because these trees contain highly flammable dead fronds and can send burning embers flying.
COSCA is seeking funding for the eventual removal of all Mexican fan palms and arundo grass, both non-native species, from the roughly 12,700 acres of open space it manages.

Rural unincorporated Monterey County. Sunny and breezy. In fact, high winds triggered power shut offs in South County this week. https://www.montereycountynow.com/blogs/news_blog/high-winds-trigger-public-safety-power-shutoffs-in-south-county/article_3013fe9e-aca6-4f13-b722-d72f817c7f02.html #MontereyCountyNow #WildfirePrevention -
EVERYONE, including you, has a role in wildfire preparedness. Join us June 12 for a workshop on recent changes in fire safety regulations. At this event, you can learn about general home hardening, what “Zone 0” means, and whether it applies to you. The event will be June 12 from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm at the Brimhall Library's Community Room.

Wildfire prevention and preparedness is always top of mind, never more so than now.
Here’s an overview of ongoing efforts by COSCA, the joint powers agency between the city and CRPD, to protect open space and educate residents on risk reduction. We’re also working with other agencies, from the federal to the county level, on additional preparedness and resiliency measures.

Great news for the Santa Monica Mountains, and for wildfire preparedness in our area: The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy will receive $31.3 million from Prop. 4 funds for watershed improvement, wildfire resilience, chaparral and forest restoration, and workforce development. Job training will target disadvantaged and vulnerable communities.
The first batch of these funds will be on the SMMC’s Monday night agenda as a grant to @venturacountyfire (h/t former state Sen. Fran Pavley)

Today I signed four more letters stating the city's position on three state bills and a federal funding request by the county. Thousand Oaks is a strong supporter of parks, public safety, and wildfire prevention.

This week I signed another batch of letters on the city's behalf in support of or opposition to state bills now under consideration in Sacramento. Although the issues can be complex, the decision process is pretty simple: If a bill would improve the safety and well-being of Thousand Oaks residents and businesses, the city supports it.
