Stairway To Heaven :-)
A series of steps at the National Stone Centre, Wirksworth, demonstrating important UK rock types (see Alt Text). It resembles a staircase, with a dark tunnel at the top leading into light... like a near death experience... hence, Stairway To Heaven.
There are also wonderful examples of dry stone walling from all around the country. I half expected to bump into @kristiedegaris or @Ivor. A good day-out!

If I would have my life to live over again,
I would find an old stone wall in disrepair
and I would spend my days seeking the tumbled
down stones hidden in the grass.By day I would rebuild the wall. At night I
would lie in its lee. I would not be afraid
of the snakes and rodents disturbed from
their dark places in the cracks between the
stones where they sleep.And when my life came to an end and the wall
was as yet unfinished, I would not moan. I
would lay myself down against the rocks and
let my body fade away into a place of rest in

🏡 Last summer, I spent a weekend in the countryside working on my first dry stone wall.
The satisfaction of stacking each stone, knowing it’ll stand strong without mortar, was immense!
Here’s how I tackled it: • Gathered tools like a mason’s hammer and spirit level.

I yearn to work somewhere with a quarry. Rebuilding a 200 year old sea wall using the same shore stone that made it is great discipline but I dream of stones with flat tops and straight sides, rather than wonky lines and so much time spent on pinning each rock into place.

Today in Camperdown we wandered past the house with a dry stone wall that has pipes sticking out of it. It is on a corner. We turned the corner and discovered that this part of the wall has reddish-brown solid lasts from shoe making in it. Now that wall is built by someone with great wall building skills and a delightful eccentric, creative streak.
