The Bargain

I know how youth spends freely what it owns,How time makes dust of crowns and ancient stones. So I would take this evening as it comes,And ask no promise from the flesh and bones.

Monday

Monday slips beneath my doorin silk and morning light.I leave the coffee waitingand let the day undress me—like satin poured over warm skin.

The Waiting Flame

The night leans near my door, and the rain is whispering there;the curtains breathe, the lamplight wanes, and something moves upon the air—not wind, not rain, but something morethan either, and less than a name. The room has grown strangely still;the clock is far away. The wine is warm, the window dark, the last pale edges of the dayhave fallen from the sill;and my heart, that would have slept, has waked beneath its quiet keeping. O beautiful night, how softly thou dost enter—not as a storm, […]

The Intelligence of Love

He knew the sound beneath a sound—the latch before the door was turned,my footfall altered on the ground, the kettle's hush, the lamp that burned. He read the weather through the glass, the gull's low angle, sheep's unrest;one lifted ear would let him passfrom dreaming into watchfulness. I gave him fields, and winter walks,my hands through burr and rain-wet fur,the little language made of looks,of gesture, whistle, touch, and stir. He gave me something harder won:his fierce attention, […]

Livro 13: 1980 (Poema 01/60) Estou aqui no mundo

Livro 13: 1980 (Poema 01/60)

Estou aqui no mundo

O sagrado ninho recebe a minha existência.
Meu sacrossanto corpinho
recebe os mais atenciosos cuidados e afetos.
Minha única missão é existir.

O meu mundo hoje é minha linda fantasia.
Minha família sempre cuidando de mim,
me protegendo do tal mundo real.
Sou grato a meu Deus.

For Nelson (May 16, 1944-July 13, 2005)

If I would have my life to live over again,
I would find an old stone wall in disrepair
and I would spend my days seeking the tumbled
down stones hidden in the grass.

By day I would rebuild the wall. At night I
would lie in its lee. I would not be afraid
of the snakes and rodents disturbed from
their dark places in the cracks between the
stones where they sleep.

And when my life came to an end and the wall
was as yet unfinished, I would not moan. I
would lay myself down against the rocks and
let my body fade away into a place of rest in
the cracks between the stones.

Love

on this cool night darling
i think of you

as this soft silky breeze
wafts in through the window
i can feel it blow
wispfully against your hair

memories of love
of warmth
gently nudge my quiet heart
