So it seems to me that Google can see your phone IP even if location is turned off and you are running a VPN. huh. I just went to see how to delete Google auto-generated passkeys and the only way seems to be to sign out of the device account (which I need).
Remember, Google continuously pester you to add your home address.

I spruced up my website, and went through a few old posts. This one from 2019 might interest some here. Hackers, Chucklingsquad, the Laughing Man and how data is always uncontrollable. Special mentions to Vague Blur and the League of Noble Peers.

So why does Google keep hassling for my home address? What possible legitimate reason can it have?
This is a new thing, and it can still see my general location even though every location setting is off.

Macron is now openly calling out bigtech extractive practices and commidification of the user. Good. We need a lot more of this. We need universities to lead this pressure everywhere.

News in Instagram robo-hacking: I just got this. I deactivated my IG about 5 yrs ago. I used to love IG when it wasnt owned by FB but now its just a dump for marketing and grifting, just what we all feared after FB bought it. I haven't attempted to log in for years. Be warned. #instagram #hacking #meta #facebook #Datasociety #youaretheproduct

Today in cybercrime. The interesting thing here is the mention of introducing govt funded furlough schemes for SMEs affected by bigco's who need to shut down automated supply chain systems due to cyber attacks.

I'm astonished to read about the Meta child chatbots that engage in "sensual" intimate conversations. How can Meta even make these bots let alone populate anyone's socmed feed with them? That's even before you consider the underage aspect. Just an astonishing level of capitalist malign practice towards users. Why do national governments just accept this?

Reactions to this morning's flurry of fairly pithy posts from Ben Williamson. Anger is an energy. Ed-tech is a mess, uncritical adoption dating back a long time led to the current situation.

Let's play a game.
Don't say PowerPoint presentation, say slidedeck
Don't say Word, say text document
Don't say Photoshop, say image editing
Don't say Excel, say spreadsheet
Don't say...Language is important. When corporate companies own the names of the tasks or the digital items you create, you have become a cog in their branding machine.

The Bluesky shareholders are competitors to Fediverse apps. They ARE very commercial, they are data extractive (eg see screenshots of the link referral). The new socmed commercial companies are now really understanding that Megacorps Socmed will not last, and they are coming for our data. But, we are the Freeverse and I think it makes no difference to us. I do think fedi ppl are a bit different, we want something different.

Today I woke up thinking: of all the tech Ive learned, hacked up, botched, worked with, watched being innovated, done evaluation studies on, made money with, enjoyed... I have never seen a technology elicit so much anger as Gen AI & LLMs. So much anger and frustration. So much, in so many places.

Im searching around for good sources to build a paper on technosocial contracts for urban citizen learning. I came across this from @baldur (May 23). It's a great summary of what's wrong with the digital social contract, and the steady breakdown that's led to our current situation. He'll be getting cited by me, probably several times.

The commodified identity of the digitised self: every data point is owned by Megacorps. Each tiny piece of data generated by any action or interaction is seeded, propagated, sold and resold. That's it. That is all it amounts to. Its not about you or the SaaS, it's only ever about who owns the data.
This is the same for #edtech as any other #UX tech. Universities are just more data mills.

I don't use loyalty apps cos I really don't care about most of their bargain offers. But I do care about overall discounts on prices. But using these apps now risks being pestered by other adverts and promotions in the ongoing #enshittification of data society.

I'm kind of suspicious that hosting the AI / ML safety summit at Bletchley Park is a sort of passive aggressive trolling of the billionaire playboys attending. You know, like "yeah well we were here first after all...". This would be typical of the current crop of tory middle managers in charge here.
But I'm trying to follow it fairly closely and keep track of discussions, it seems serious, with quality attendees.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮
==========================I noted with some concern that my institution's advice on email signature includes every proprietary socmed platform - an icon list of 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗫, 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺, 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗸𝗧𝗼𝗸. It made me recall the days a decade ago when HE had not even heard of socmed, nevermind utilised it for 'brand' or L&T. But I now yearn for those days. That list is 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲, including actors that are considered 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 by western nations (TikTok), or spread 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 so much that the EU digital rights chief (Thierry Breton) gives a 24 hr warning to Musk about it.
Yet, we are advised to literally connect our *every email* to these platforms and our profiles on them (and subsequently our university servers and technical infrastructure). Are we mad? Yes, it's a bit like 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗺 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲, in thrall to big tech and our perceived huge self importance, or ultra tech-bro hipness.
Speaking as an ex senior lecturer who at one time promoted all use of socmed in L&T and for uni or faculty branding, and even ran a big academic project with it - here are my current rules for use of email, connecting to your socmed profiles, and general use of socmed:
1. Stop using any socmed in your L&T. It places student data and privacy at high risk. Youre also giving L&T content to proprietary platforms. Don't.
2. Stop giving your email so haphazardly to anyone. Its an open invitation to identity theft, or at the least, spamming.
3. Stop putting your life history on your Facebook profile. Its an open invitation to identity theft.
4. Place minimal academic biography on LinkedIn, that you regularly update (ie that can only be cached for short periods).
5. Leave X. Never use it for professional content dissemination. You are compromising everyone else to expect them to use that platform.
6. Never use TikTok for L&T. Just dont do it.
7. If you really must use Instagram (for anything), just use it as a personal thing, dont involve your place of work.Remember, I have a fair amount of tech knowledge as well as academic experience at this stuff.
