  1. From man's best friend to mass graves

"California officials unearth 117 dog bodies, many with bullet fragments, at ‘no-kill’ shelter. Police say they also found more than 600 dog collars in area where they suspect animals were killed." >>

    Overpopulation of domestic pets
"In some countries, there is an overpopulation of pets such as cats, dogs, and exotic animals. In the United States, six to eight million animals are brought to shelters each year, of which an estimated three to four million are subsequently euthanized, including 2.7 million considered healthy and adoptable." >>

  2. Conspicuous consumption

In my impecunious youth a Toblerone was worth a (very occasional) purchase. But 4.5kg of adequate but generally indifferent chocolate?

Seen while shopping this afternoon. I say conspicuous because this is not something you are going to smuggle in in your back pocket.

  3. I went to the Natick Mall this morning. First time in years that I've been in a mall. I went fully prepared: early, with specific destinations, earbuds with great noise cancellation, Miles Davis tunes.....But, not sure my brain will forgive me any time soon. #NotAShopper #MallsSuck #ConspicuousConsumption #NotForMe

  4. CW: Gallows humour, recent death

I was sad to note the recent passing of fashion designer and icon Giorgio Armani. He was 91, though, so at least he didn't go prematurely.

I understand the funeral arrangements are that he is being buried in an *extremely* expensive casket, and once a year they will dig him up and replace it with that year's model.

    > I think a lot of the elitism comes from people who aren't actually developing things, thus it makes sense that their greatest technical achievement & source of pride would be an act of mere consumption.

"… respondents believe that appearances affect outcomes, and they are willing to distort their consumption choices toward observable goods (e.g., attire, frivolous goods, or charitable contributions) in order to signal a higher SES status"

  7. Good morning. 🌞 ☕ 😄

    17 April 2024

When I was in college, a subject that a teacher spoke of was conspicuous consumption. That is buying and using things of greater cost than is actually needed. It is a flaunting of wealth so that other people see that person's affluence. We mostly all do it I suppose to a certain extent, but some people take it to a new level and will often borrow money to appear affluent. Borrowing money to have stuff that you don't need just to impress someone that you probably don't know, doesn't make any sense. I mean, what's the point? Wanting other people' envy is not a good reason for spending.

“One of the main downsides of having low self-esteem is the attendant desire to have high-priced possessions, especially those with which you can leave your yard.” - Mokokoma Mokhonoana

  8. "The idea is that consumers, tired of loud and logoed-up outdoor gear, will seek simpler fare that's more understated but no less functional."

I'll believe it when I see logo-free outdoor clothing. People really want others to know that they're wearing Arc'teryx, Patagonia, Norrøna, Fjällräven, etc. REI has made their own logo-free outdoor clothing for years and that's not taking over the market.

  9. It’s so messed up that western culture has us thrilled by the thought of the conspicuous wasting of resources. That we can achieve catharsis by destroying useful items. I see it in rage rooms where everyday items are smashed with sledgehammers, with food fights, trophy hunting, etc. What a bizarre culture. #Waste #Disposable #ConspicuousConsumption

"consumption cascade… the glut of private goods and the shortage of decent public expenditure, filthy public squares, power lines that should have buried decades early.
#ConspicuousConsumption is a net negative for society and the #consumption arms race is a net negative and that #luck plays a big role in successful outcomes."
