  1. Hello Fediverse friends.

This one is a bit embarrassing for me but I post my mistales as well as my wins.

A viewer sent me a Sega Game Gear as a parts-only donor. It had already been recapped, but it still wouldn’t power on.

Part 1 is teardown + diagnosis. I clean up old electrolyte, inspect the previous work, and start tracking the real fault. No miracle fix yet, but we do find a solid lead for Part 2? Maybe?

Thanks to @iFixit who very kindly sent me some new tools for the cabin.

Retooting is always appreciated (but never expected) :)

  2. Anyone know if those DS Lite replacement touch screens on Amazon are any good? Mine is a little scratched but works quite well. The only "problem" I have with it right now is a slight scraping sound when I drag the stylus in some games. I wonder if it's feasible to get a good replacement. amazon.com/dp/B07D3RSJS3

  3. Finally getting around to a several year old project of restoring a spare Game Boy I have. I think I picked this up at a goodwill but it's been so long I don't remember. This shell was absolutely DISGUSTING but it's nice and clean now as best as I can get it.

I don't plan on retrobriting it because I want it to show off it's character when it's in working condition. Once I replace all the corroded battery contacts, I'll test it to see if it works. Thankfully, none of the corrosion seeped into the main boards at all so I have high hopes for it.

If it works, I'll get to work replacing the screen, and order some speaker and power mods to modernize it a bit. Unsure if I'm gonna go with a rechargeable battery or not sometime down the line.

  8. I had to get my PS3 repaired recently. The HDMI port was damaged, and needed to be replaced, and the person I took it to (just a local guy I found on Marketplace) did a really great job getting it back up and running.

I bought this PS3 a few months ago (also off of Marketplace) and I’d had issues with the HDMI output since day 1. Eventually it stopped outputting HDMI altogether, but continued to output fine over component. I was worried the HDMI chip had failed, but then noticed the damaged connector on a closer look. Still though, I was worried it wasn’t just the connector and that even with the repair it would still fail to output, so I was very relieved when he texted me telling me the repair was successful.

I actually ended up paying more for the repair than for the console itself ($70 vs. $50). But I really wanted it repaired instead of just buying another one, because it’s a REALLY late-lifecycle Super Slim from 2016 (the same year the PS4 Pro came out!), so I’m hoping that it’ll survive for a good while now that the port has been replaced, thermal compound has been reapplied and an SSD has been installed instead of an HDD!

The Super Slim isn’t my favorite design iteration of the console — that title definitely belongs to the Slim — but the smaller size, greater reliability, younger age and lower power consumption of Super Slims (especially in later models) make them a good choice for a PS3 in 2024.
