Hello Fediverse friends.

This one is a bit embarrassing for me but I post my mistales as well as my wins.

A viewer sent me a Sega Game Gear as a parts-only donor. It had already been recapped, but it still wouldn’t power on.

Part 1 is teardown + diagnosis. I clean up old electrolyte, inspect the previous work, and start tracking the real fault. No miracle fix yet, but we do find a solid lead for Part 2? Maybe?

Retooting is always appreciated (but never expected) :)

I've been sitting on this one for a while. Probably as long as I was sitting on Alien Trilogy.

Being a game that, I assume, was made to just push the Coca-Cola brand, I was surprised at not only how competent this game was but also how enjoyable it was.

Sure. It does feel, and play like, a Sonic clone. At least they did it well!

And it is done. I am not super happy with this mod. Needed a lot of cutting of the shell. The screen has very good quality though!
Would be nice if they sold aftermarket shells exactly for this mod. Screen is also a lot bigger than the original one!

The replacement display for @fiskelandslaget‘s GameGear arrived. I had to cancel my order from RetroKai as they seem to have gone AWOL. Sad. I liked their screens!

I just unpacked @fiskelandslaget's GameGear. It is dead, and most probably suffers from crappy capacitors. I already have a full replacement set here, so I will post some updates in the next days to weeks. Let's see if the LCD screen is still viable, or a TFT mod is also required.

Cleansing the retro gaming palate with a bit of Sonic Triple Trouble. My favorite Sonic game on the GameGear. However the Sunset levels are my least favorite ones. But the turquoise zone is great. And the bonus levels are great, too.

the #SegaGameGear was the first console I bought with my own money Batman Returns was the game I bought with it. I still remember the feeling of having a gaming console, with a (by then) exceptional screen which I could carry with me.
I still remember the feeling, a couple weeks later, when I plugged the power cable in the wrong connector (WTF!) and fried the motherboard.

To say I was today year's old (34) when i discovered what the #SegaGameGear is all about would be... Slightly incorrect.

I knew about it, I knew it required a small power grid of 6x AA batteries to power it and probably at the time it was out, it would have been prohibitively expensive for someone who already had a GameBoy.

Heck, this thing is nearly as old as I am!

I am no hardware expert, so I can't talk about the specifications of the device with any coherence, but what I can do is talk about the games I have played, though not on original hardware.

My descent into the #Aleste series has yielded three damn good games on the GameGear, and I encourage others to check them out. But I will talk about those later when I finish #GGAleste3

I am currently in awe over this 'little' device and really looking forward to trying some of the other games. If anyone has any recommendations of other great GameGear games, i am all ears!
