For a change of pace, today I dug out the #OGXBox my friend gave me because her ex left it. This isn't the one I bought off the back of a minivan at SPAC. This is the Ex Box.
I figured I'd check the clock capacitor on this one and... it was leaky! It kept turning off, so I cleaned it up and soldered some magnet wire and now it seems to stay on! Just traces A-D seem to be enough! For now!
I also soft modded it! Apparently we can do that now! Neat!

Well, this is the first time I've ever done a legitimate charity shop find.
OG Xbox, two original controllers, cables, 5 games. Console in mint condition. €30. I actually feel a little guilty.

One of these is not like the other.
Official controller has two rumblr motors, a full-length 6-pin cable, and detachable motor cables.
Third-party green controller has a short-length cable that branches out to 5 wires directly soldered to the board covered in hot glue, ~~optional ground wire~~ some string, two motors directly soldered to the board.
Third-party black controller has dodgy 6-pin short-length cable, *one* motor directly soldered and hot glued.
(I replaced the cables after)

I'm going to attempt to unlock my Xbox drive. I want to upgrade it to use a Sata drive, but I don't want to deal with ATA locking. So I need a custom BIOS to disable that. Problem: the TSOP is write-protected.
In order to circumvent this, I'll need to solder these two points (highlighted in red). Finger for scale.
Also, thanks to ConsoleMods for this amazing guide. I would be completely lost without it.

Because I hate myself, I'm now working on rust bindings for the NXDK project. We'll see how much progress I can get done. Right now, I want to finish implementing the HAL.

Yesterday I picked up an original Xbox! I'll be honest, I don't know that much about these machines, so I am definitely looking for advice on how to get started with this bad boy, especially in terms of maintenance and care! If you've got any tips, I'd love to hear!
It came with about 15 games (only half were sports!), a memory card and two Logitech Xbox Cordless Precision Controllers with their receivers -- which was great for me, since I was going to buy those controllers myself anyway, and they're not exactly cheap.
It's a 1.4 revision, and at a glance it seems to be in very good condition - it was bought and owned by an adult when it came out and hasn't been used since, it's just sat in a box. But I know capacitors can leak and other things can go bad, so I'll be looking into what I've gotta do to keep it alive.
I'm probably not interested in modding this system (unless I can softmod it with a memory card or something like a PS2). If I want to mod one, I'll buy a second one, but I like having at least one stock version of a console.
