The #SocialWeb exists because we refused to accept that surveillance capitalism was inevitable.
We chose #federation over centralization.
#CommunityOwnership over corporate control.
We need the same approach for #WearableTech
Hardware that clearly indicates when it's recording. Software that keeps data local. Designs that prioritize consent over convenience.
The question isn't whether this technology will exist. It's who gets to control how it works.
Meta's approach serves advertisers and data brokers. A community-driven approach would serve actual human safety and dignity.
My framework: Technology should expand human agency, not reduce it.
When surveillance tools are marketed as consumer convenience, we have a responsibility to call out the real consequences for vulnerable people.

I remain a believer in state-based interventions. In many ways they're indispensable.
However, when the state gets captured by nefarious interests, it is important to remember that non-state organizing remains real and powerful throughout history.
Community ownership is a great example. And community land is enormously important.

Some good things are happening in #Scotland regarding community ownership of land.
The same sort of approach, enabling communities to acquire abandoned land at minimal cost, is also needed in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

It's very clear that Thatcherism's privatisation of municipal bus companies failed completely (like water and indeed I think every other such privatisation) - and indeed that the increasing urgency of action on climate-ecological breakdown makes public investment in and strategic control of public transport ever more vital.
But the green/left needs to think it through carefully. I was centrally involved in the local bus company buy-outs that in the late 1980s and 90s were a local response to the forced privatisation (I subsequently wrote 'Turnarounds - A Development Worker's Guide to Democratic Conversions & Buyouts' for the Open University and the Industrial Common Ownership Movement - material which later formed the basis of 'Delivering Employee & Community Buyouts', which is still available free online - https://bccm.coop/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Delivering-EBO-Guide.pdf .)
Both local municipalities and trade unions tended to insist on local ownership, while industry experts tended to favour much larger regional structures, predicting that national private bus companies would out-compete too locally focused bus services - which is exactly what happened, and what produced the current bus chaos in the UK.

While most of the #Scottish #CommunityOwnership movement has focused on residence-based definitions of community and land, the thing about community ownership is that it allows for explicitly reimagining the parameters of community.
Second-home owners remain a problem, but this way at least they are contributing to the viability of critical #CommunityInfrastruture, thereby supporting a community that they evidently care about a lot.
