  1. The model was scaled to the Monogram First Lunar Landing model kit, because I happened to have one of the astronaut figures from that laying around. It would have been VERY small, like mini-van sized probably. I was comparing it to narrow-gauge logging and agricultural railroads here on Earth, where things are scaled down. I designed a locomotive and passenger cars too, on paper, but never built them.

  3. One of only three Saturn V rockets left in the world, this one is on display in the Saturn V Hall of the Davidson Center for Space Exploration in Huntsville, AL.

    And it is massive.

  4. Only recently displaced as the most powerful machine ever built.

And still, I hear the MTV "bump, da dump, da dump da dump, bump, da dump, da dada dada dump, da dump, et cetera" every time I see the Saturn V.

  6. "The moment of humankind's first voyage to the Moon and back was captured in a series of photos taken at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observing Station in Maui, Hawaii. They show the trans-lunar injection rocket burn which sent Apollo 8 hurtling out of Earth orbit toward the Moon on December 21, 1968"

  7. In spite of the joke that NASA spent a million dollars developing a pen that could write in space, while the Soviets just used a pencil, the real story is more complicated.
In reality, US astronauts used pencils, crayons, and grease pencils, as did Soviet cosmonauts. None were an adequate solution.
Paul #Fischer, of Fischer #Pen Company, had been working on a pen that could write upside down or in any other position, something useful for many jobs, and offered it to NASA at a discount of $3 per pen.
When the Soviets eventually turned up asking for pen, they had to pay full retail.

  8. #PPOD: This oblique view of the Moon was taken from the Lunar Module during the Apollo 12 mission on 1969-11-19 and shows the 107 km diameter Copernicus crater near the horizon at the center of the frame. Reinhold crater, 42 km across, is in the foreground. The Carpathian mountain range is visible on the horizon at the lower left. This area is just to the north of the Apollo 12 landing site. The view is looking northeast. Credit: NASA

  9. Today is the anniversary of the #Apollo11 Moon landing!
At Kennedy #Space Center’s Visitor Complex, it’s possible to visit the #Apollo / Saturn V Center, where a #SaturnV #rocket is on display, with its stages separated.
These are the 5 J-2 engines that powered the S-II stage that was the second stage on the Saturn V.
They burned liquid hydrogen (#LH2) and liquid oxygen (#LOX). This high-energy combination of propellants made it much easier for the United States to build a successful #Moon mission, whereas the Soviets were forced to stick with hypergolic fuels or kerosene, making lunar missions impractical.

  10. Your literary exercise today is John Houbolt’s letter to Robert Seamans, “Manned Lunar Landing Through Use of Lunar Orbit Rendezvous”.

The good shit starts at page 55 in this NASA archive document. So good.

Also, Houbolt went to Joliet. Mfers you need to hire more Southsiders.

  11. Finally, here is a look at the EVA (extravehicular activity) spacesuit used on Apollo 7 through 14.

The display reads: This spacesuit configuration was worn by astronauts for EVA's during Apollo flights 7 through 14, including the first spacewalks on the Moon during Apollo 11. Suit donning was accomplished through a pressure sealing closure located vertically from the upper back to the lower front. An integrated garment provided thermal and meteoroid protection, with an extravehicular visor assembly to protect the crewman's eyes from direct and lunar surface-reflected solar radiation. Lunar books provided protection from the +260 degree to -250 degree temperatures on the Moon's surface.
