  1. 👨‍🚀🚀 In 1984 #NASA #astronaut Bruce McCandless II became the first person in #history to fly untethered in #space using a nitrogen-powered jet pack.

He navigated over 90 meters (300 ft) from the #SpaceShuttle Challenger to demonstrate how #humans can move independently in a vacuum. The flight provided data on orbital maneuvering that helped engineers develop systems for satellite retrieval and repairs.

  5. Last night after watching the Artemis II crew splashdown, I explained to our son that we used to be able to land our shuttle like an airplane. The whole "I Dream of Jeannie" splashdown process feels so retro for this Gen X-er. 🚀

The #SpaceShuttle used hyoergolics for the RCS and OMS. They had a cleaning procedure that had to take place after touchdown and before the hatch was opened.

I'm guessing the sea takes care of that.

I know the Russians have non-hypergolic RCS, (somehow) using gaseous kerosene, but I dont know about anything else.

Wikipedia says the service module uses hyoergolic fuel, but doesn't talk about the capsule's RCS fuel.

This article implies the capsule uses hypergolics, but it's not very clear: https://trendsmask.com/how-much-fuel-is-in-the-orion-capsule-532483.html

  7. Amongst all the cool things happening with #Artemis2, they have with them the moon #flag which was to have flown on the surface in 1973 during the canceled Apollo 18 flight. This same flag has also flown on STS1 and 135 (first and last #SpaceShuttle flights) as well as the first Crew Dragon flight. That flag has seen some things!

  13. 🚀✨ Ah, the 90s! When connecting to the internet felt like launching a space shuttle 🚀✨. This "nostalgia hit" has all the charm of waiting for paint to dry while a modem screeches your ears off. 🤦‍♂️💾 If you miss the sound of dial-up, just stick a fork in your ear and save the coffee money. ☕💸

  15. There was no way that one could have confidence that conditions the next time might not produce #erosion three times more severe than the time before. Officials fooled themselves into thinking they had such understanding and confidence, in spite of the peculiar variations from case to case. A mathematical model was made to calculate erosion. This was a model based not on physical understanding but on empirical curve fitting en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Richard_
