    1) 2nd law/Carnot efficiency for internal combustion engines or gas turbines does not apply to electrochemistry. Hydrogen fuel cells often "toss away" less than 1/2, not 3/4 of heat engines' +embodied energy".

    2) 700Bar gaseous #H2 storage is good for many end uses; liquified #LH2 is a special case.

    3) Underground #GH2 storage similar to current seasonal natgas case enables seasonal energy storage & dunkelflaute mitigation.

  2. Hey peeps, any comment on why the 8MW Calistoga hydrogen fuel cell microgrid doesn't include auto-bumpless transfer for grid to islanded microgrid mode if the T&D line goes down?

    FCW appears to say it only works on a PSPS event signal from PG&E!

    I could have saved SwRI’s client NYSEARCH a lot of money by showing them this 1968 NASA report⬇️: solubility of hydrogen in liquified natural gas (methane) is well below 1% (≈0.06% v/v).

    So it is basically impossible to store economically useful amounts of #hydrogen in #LNG.

    What "storage problem"?

    Cost-effective gaseous #GH2, liquid #LH2 and cryo-compressed hydrogen #CCH2 storage methods are available for moderate amounts of H2.

    Several avenues of underground storage are good for seasonal storage (think summer - winter) of massive quantities of hydrogen.

  6. #Battery based #EV are a fad, scam and duds. Absolute cul-de-sac stopping us from implementing real solutions to get away from hydrocarbon-based ICEs.

    We could absolutely switch/transition to #LH2 ICEs from diesel ICE tech (higher press manifolds than #gasoline), and do that for a long while, before we get to some Clarkes-3rd-Law solution (lol).

  7. Today is the anniversary of the #Apollo11 Moon landing!
    At Kennedy #Space Center’s Visitor Complex, it’s possible to visit the #Apollo / Saturn V Center, where a #SaturnV #rocket is on display, with its stages separated.
    These are the 5 J-2 engines that powered the S-II stage that was the second stage on the Saturn V.
    They burned liquid hydrogen (#LH2) and liquid oxygen (#LOX). This high-energy combination of propellants made it much easier for the United States to build a successful #Moon mission, whereas the Soviets were forced to stick with hypergolic fuels or kerosene, making lunar missions impractical.

    The three Space Shuttle Main #Engines burned liquid hydrogen #LH2 and liquid oxygen #LOX stored in the External Tank to push the #Shuttle into #orbit.
    The OMS helped the #Orbiter enter its final, intended orbit and carry out its mission.
    OMS and the #RCS were both fueled by toxic, but #storable #hypergolic propellants ( #MMH and #N204). These components had to be #decontaminated before displaying them.

    Mein Fazit: NIEMAND, der noch ganz bei Trost ist, wird darauf einen Business Case aufbauen!

    Seit meinem Beitrag ist ja ein wenig Zeit vergangen. Inzwischen denke ich, wir werden zukünftig nahezu ausschließlich #Ammoniak-Importe sehen.

  11. Mit dem Spruch "Keine Münze mehr fürs StuWe" hat die #Münze13 sich in #Tübingen selbst besetzt. Zusammen mit der #Gartensia ist es damit das zweite besetzte Haus der Stadt.

    Das Studierendenwerk hatte sich vorher geweigert Reperaturen durchzuführen und Kaufverhandlungen aufzunehmen. In der selben Situation (jedoch noch nicht besetzt) befinden sich die Leibnizhäuser in Tübingen (#LH2 und #LH3)
